The flag of Belize was adopted on 21 September 1981, the day Belize became independent. It consists of the Coat of Arms on a blue field with red stripes at the top and bottom. British Honduras obtained a coat of arms on 28 January 1907, which formed the basis of the badge used on British ensigns. The coat of arms recalls the logging industry that first led to British settlement there. The figures, tools, and mahogany trees represent this industry. The Belize Athletic Association (BAA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Belize. History BAA was founded in 1956 as Belize Amateur Athletic Association (BAAA). In 2013, the name was changed to Belize Athletic Association. In August 2010, Ian Gray was elected as new president. However, there was an ongoing internal dispute between board officials claiming the lead of BAAA leading to the executive been dissolved by the IAAF. Samantha Dirks (born 18 December 1992) is a Belizean sprinter. She competed in the women's 400 metres at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. Dirks also competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's 400 metres, where she placed 7th in her heat and did not advance to the semifinals. Her time, 54.16 seconds, was a season best for her, but she said afterward that she had been hoping for a better time. She was one of two flag bearers for Belize in the opening ceremony.
