Invitational Sports
A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games, but may also occur at other sporting events. Demonstration sports were officially introduced in the 1912 Summer Olympics, when Sweden decided to include glima, traditional Icelandic wrestling, in the Olympic program, but with its medals not counting as official. Most organizing committees then decided to include at least one demonstration sport at each edition of the Games, usually some typical or popular sport in the host country, like baseball at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and taekwondo at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. From 1912 to 1992, only two editions of the Summer Olympics did not have demonstration sports on their program. Kevin Croke
Kevin Croke (born 4 July 1982) is an Irish rugby union player. He played club rugby for his university UCD and St Mary's College. Croke has numerous representative honours including caps for Ireland at Under 19's, 21's, 7's, Club International and at Universities level where he captained the 2007 team. At provincial level he has represented Leinster at U-19 and U-21. He captained UCD for the 2005/06 season in the All-Ireland League Division 1. He also captained the team which retained the colours in 2005 for the university. Croke is considered a stalwart of university, club and amateur rugby in Ireland.
