Belgaum Assembly Constituency
Belgaum Vidhana Sabha seat was part of the Karnataka state assembly in India, and part of Belgaum Lok Sabha constituency, Belgaum Lok Sabha seat. The seat ceased to exist after the assembly seats' boundary was redrawn in 2008. Now the city's constituencies are Belgaum Dakshin Assembly constituency, Belgaum Dakshin, Belgaum Uttar Assembly constituency, Belgaum Uttar, and Belgaum Rural Assembly constituency, Belgaum Rural. When the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka were created in 1960 on linguistic lines, Belgaum district was included in Karnataka. This decision was opposed by Marathi speaking people in the district, who argued they were in majority. Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti was formed to fight for the cause, supported mostly by left-wing socialists in Maharashtra but not by right-wing Hindu organizations. The Karnataka Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of the Indian state of Karnataka. Karnataka is one of the six states in India where the state legislature is bicameral, comprising two houses. Belgaum, officially Belagavi, Lok Sabha seat, is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian state of Karnataka. Vidhana Sabha segments The composition of Belgaum Lok Sabha seat has undergone several changes. In 1962, there were three assembly seats in the constituency from Belgaum, named Belgaum City, Belgaum I and Belgaum II. Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (Committee for Integration with Maharashtra)( MES) is a linguistic socio-political committee based out of Belagavi city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It acts as a party demanding the merger Belagavi district in Karnataka with the Maharashtra. History After India became independent in 1947, the Belagavi district (which was in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency) became a part of the Bombay State. In 1948, the Belagavi City Council passed a resolution declaring that the district was a Marathi majority district and demanding for the inclusion of the Belagavi district in the proposed state of Samyukta Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti was formed in the same year pursuing the single point demand for the inclusion of the district in the state of Maharashtra. Narayan Rao Tarale (नारायणराव तरळे; 1936–2019) was an Indian politician from Karnataka. He was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Biography Tarale was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Belagavi (Vidhan Sabha constituency), Belgaum in 1994.
