Belga (cigarette)
Belga was a Belgian brand of cigarettes that was owned and manufactured by British American Tobacco. History The brand was launched in 1923 by the tobacco vendors Alphonse and François Vander Elst. After World War I ended, Alphonse and François Vander Elst wanted to launch a brand which the Belgians could be proud of. The new brand was named after the then currency Belga, exactly the price of a pack. In addition, the brand name was adorned in the Belgian tricolour in order to stir up patriotic feelings of the citizens. Soon Belga grew into the most popular brand of Belgium. In 1941, the brand was removed from the market for a few years after the German occupation of Belgium during World War II because of its patriotic character. The brand was known for its iconic image, designed by Leo Marfurt, of a lady with a yellow scarf and black hat with a yellow feather standing against a red background. ''Empire Bell'' was a collier which was built by Öresundsvarvet, Landskrona, Sweden as the passenger ship ''Belgia'' in 1930. In 1940 she was rebuilt as a cargo ship. In 1941, she was damaged by enemy bombing and burnt out. She was salvaged and sold to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), repaired and renamed ''Empire Bell''. She was torpedoed and sunk by ''U-442'' on 25 September 1942. Description ''Belgia'' was built by Öresundsvarvet, Landskrona. She was yard number 28 and was launched on 11 January 1930 with completion on 7 May. She was long, with a beam of and a depth of . Her GRT was 2,023, with a NRT of 1,074. Beau Michael Vincent Esparrago Belga (born November 30, 1986) is a Filipino professional basketball player for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters of the Philippine Basketball Association. He is also an assistant coach for the UST Growling Tigers of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Early life Belga was born and raised in Gubat, Sorsogon and is the eldest among the three siblings. His father was a family driver while his mother was a housewife.
