Belding is a city in Ionia County, Michigan, Ionia County in the U.S. state of Michigan, completely surrounded by Otisco Township, Michigan. The population was 5,757 at the United States Census, 2010, 2010 census. History In 1838, six years before John Green came to the area that later would bear his name, Levi Broas, Belding's first settler, arrived in the area. The community first was known as Broas Rapids, later Patterson Mills and even, during logging days, as Hog Wallow. The name Belding was chosen in 1871 to honor the Belding family. Belding Area Schools
Belding Area Schools is a school district headquartered in Belding, Michigan. Previously the district used the "Redskin Redskin is a slang term for Native Americans in the United States and First Nations in Canada. Wes Cummings, who served as the athletic director at Belding, stated that Belding's athletic rivals often made derogatory references to killing Native Americans during sports games. In December 2016 the school board voted to remove the "Redskins" as the school district mascot. the district has since decided to change the name and mascot to the Black Knight.
