Belcher is a village in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 263 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport- Bossier city metropolitan statistical area. History Previously named Horseshoe after the bayou that runs through the town, Belcher was renamed in 1899 after James Clinton Belcher, a former confederate soldier and overseer of Wild Lucia plantation. Geography Belcher is located in northeastern Caddo Parish at (32.750518, -93.833772), less than northwest of the Red River. U.S. Route 71 passes through the western side of the village, leading north to Gilliam and south to Shreveport. Interstate 49 at Exit 228 is west of the center of town. ''Hydrophis belcheri'', commonly known as the faint-banded sea snake or Belcher's sea snake, is an extremely venomous species of elapid sea snake. It has a timid temperament and would normally have to be subjected to severe mistreatment before biting. Usually those bitten are fishermen handling nets, although only one-quarter of those bitten are envenomated since the snake rarely injects much of its venom. Although not much is known about the venom of this species, its LD50 toxicity in mice has been determined to be 0.24 mg/kg when delivered intramuscularly. The Belcher Mound Site (16CD13) is an archaeological site in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. It is located in the Red River Valley 20 miles north of Shreveport and about one-half mile east of the town of Belcher, Louisiana. It was excavated by Clarence H. Webb from 1959 to 1969. The site gives its name to a local phase of the Caddoan Mississippian culture, the Belcher Phase, which radiocarbon dates suggest lasted from 1400 to 1600 CE. Site description The Belcher Site was a ceremonial center with a mound, cemetery, and village area inhabited circa 900 - 1700 CE. The mound at Belcher was built in successive levels. Each layer had a structure, which was burned or deserted after a period of use, and the mound subsequently covered with a new layer and building. The earliest were rectangular wall trench structures with wattle and daub walls and grass thatched gable roofs. Jonathan Belcher House
The Jonathan Belcher House is a historic house located at 360 North Main Street in Randolph, Massachusetts. The house was built in 1806 by Jonathan Belcher (1767–1839) and his wife Abigail (Thayer) who had been married on April 12, 1792. Their son, also named Jonathan, married Hannah (Jordan) and later added to the house. Jonathan and Hannah's granddaughter, Abigail Tower Tarbell, gave the house to The Ladies Library Association in 1911; the Association later changed its name to the Randolph Club, whose home it is today. The house is used for weddings and other events and is occasionally open to the public. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1976. Belcher-Rowe House
The Belcher-Rowe House is a historic house at 26 Governor Belcher Lane in Milton, Massachusetts. The two-story hip-roofed wood-frame house was built in 1776 by Elizabeth Teale Belcher and Maria Louisa Emilia Teale, step-daughter and widow of the late Governor of Massachusetts Jonathan Belcher. It was the first Federal style house to be built in Milton. Elizabeth Belcher sold the house to John Rowe in 1781, and it remained in the Rowe family until 1940. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
