Belarus competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. 139 competitors, 72 men and 67 women, took part in 109 events in 20 sports. Belarus had its best ever showing both in terms of gold and overall medals at these games. The gold medal result will be later matched in 2008. Belarus Olympic Committee
The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus (, ) was one of many national Olympic committees that make up the International Olympic Committee. On February 26, 2022, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its treatment of Belarusian athletes, the International Olympic Committee suspended the NOC RB. Created in 1991, the NOC RB ( be, НОК РБ), was charged with selecting athletes to represent Belarus in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, enforcing anti- doping laws and promoting sporting activity inside Belarus. The men's discus throw event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, 24 September and Monday, 25 September. Forty-five athletes from 28 nations competed. The event was won by Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania, the nation's second victory in the men's discus throw. Lars Riedel of Germany took silver, becoming the 13th man to win multiple discus throw medals. Frantz Kruger earned South Africa's first medal in the event with his bronze. Ihar Astapkovich (also Igor Vyacheslavovich Astapkovich, be, Ігар Вячаслававіч Астапковіч; born 4 January 1963, in Navapolatsk) is a hammer thrower who won two Olympic medals, first representing the Soviet Union and later his home country of Belarus. Iryna Vasiliyevna Yatchenko ( be, Ірына Ятчанка, russian: Ирина Васильевна Ятченко; born 31 October 1965) is a Belarusian former discus thrower best known for winning two Olympic bronze medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics, although she was eventually stripped of the latter medal due to a doping offence. She also became world champion at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. Her personal best is 69.14 metres, achieved in July 2004 in Minsk. Career Yatchenko was born in Gomel. Her career at the highest level of competition lasted almost twenty years, starting with the 1990 European Athletics Championships. The men's ISSF 50 meter pistol competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics was held on 19 September. There were 36 competitors from 27 nations. Nations had been limited to two shooters each since the 1952 Games. Tanyu Kiryakov won, becoming the first shooter to win Olympic gold medals in both this event and 10 metre air pistol. 2.7 points behind, Igor Basinski won his fourth Olympic medal (third in this event—the third man to earn three in the free pistol—and second in the 2000 Games, after a bronze in the 10 metre air pistol).
