Bekwai (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
Bekwai is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Joseph Osei-Owusu is the member of parliament for the constituency. He was elected as an Independent Candidate. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party but contested as an Independent candidate after losing in the election as a New Patriotic candidate. Bekwai Municipal District
Bekwai Municipal Assembly is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Amansie East District, which it was created from the former Amansie District Council. Later, the western part of the district was split off by a decree of president John Agyekum Kufuor on 12 November 2003 (effectively 18 February 2004) to create Amansie Central District; thus the remaining part has retained as Amansie East District. Then the eastern part of the district was later split off to create Bosome Freho District on 29 February 2008; while the remaining part was elevated to municipal district assembly status on the same year to become and has since been renamed as Bekwai Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Bekwai as its capital town. Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region is located in southern part of Ghana and it is the third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of or 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 4,780,380 according to the 2011 census, accounting for 19.4% of Ghana's total population. Joseph Osei-Owusu
Joseph Osei-Owusu (born 22 January 1962, in Bekwai) is a Ghanaian lawyer, and politician. He is the first deputy speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic and also the Member of Parliament for the Bekwai constituency in the Ghanaian Parliament. Early life and education Osei-Owusu was born on 22 January 1962 had his basic education in his hometown, Bekwai. He had his O-level secondary school education at Juaben Secondary School in Juaben in the Ashanti Region in 1981. In 1983, he also had his A-level in Wenchi Secondary School. He then went on to have a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Classics and Law from the University of Ghana in 1987, a Barrister of Law (BL) from the Ghana School of Law in 1989 and an Executive master's degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2007. The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. History Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1850, when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast. First Past The Post
In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates.
