Beitou District
Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word ''Kipatauw'', meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs. In March 2012, it was named one of the ''Top 10 Small Tourist Towns'' by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan. History The area's hot springs had long been enjoyed by the aboriginal people of Taiwan. Shortly before the Japanese period a German sulfur merchant established the first hot spring club in Beitou. Districts are administrative subdivisions of the Taiwan, Republic of China (Taiwan)'s special municipality (Taiwan), special municipalities of the second level and provincial city (Taiwan), provincial cities of the third level formerly under its Provinces of China, provinces. Yangmingshan Administrative Bureau () was a County (Taiwan), county level administrative body in Republic of China's Taiwan Province between 1949 and 1973. History The territory of the Yangmingshan Administrative Bureau was administered by Shirin Town () and Hokutō Town () under Shichisei District () of Taihoku Prefecture (). It is famous for the Taiwanese hot springs, hot springs (''Onsen'') from the Tatun Volcano Group. Beitou Refuse Incineration Plant
The Beitou Refuse Incineration Plant () is an incinerator in Zhoumei Borough, Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan. History The plant was originally established as the Shilin Refuse Incineration Plant on 1 July 1991. On 1 July 1995, the plant was renamed Beitou Refuse Incineration Plant and it was made a unit of the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taipei City Government. Technical details The plant spans over an area of 10.6 hectares. It can treat 1,800 tons of garbage from the Taipei area per day. Facilities The plant's smokestack is equipped with an observation deck at an altitude of 116 meters. On 1 January 2000, a revolving restaurant opened above it (claimed to be world's first restaurant on a waste incinerator chimney), which seats 120 guests and is powered by energy from the incinerator. Fu Hsing Kang College
The Political Warfare College (), also known as Fu Hsing Kang College (復興崗, "Renaissance Hill"), is a military academy in Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan. During the Japanese occupation period, this location was the racetrack of Beitou; after Chiang Ching-kuo's inspection, on July 15, 1951, it became the campus of the formerly known "Political Worker Cadres School". The College was modelled after the pre-war Moscow Sun Yat-sen University; it was intended to provide the Republic of China Armed Forces with political commissars loyal to the Kuomintang regime. On 1 September 2006 the College became part of the National Defense University, thereby ceasing to be a stand-alone institution.
