Beijing Spring (film)
''Beijing Spring'' is a 2021 American documentary film directed by Andrew Cohen (filmmaker), Andy Cohen and co-directed by Gaylen Ross. The film chronicles the struggle for free speech and free artistic expression in the People's Republic of China (PRC) during a brief period of political reform during the late 1970s known as the Beijing Spring. Production started in 2010 and finished in 2020. Due to legal and jurisdictional issues surrounding the rights of Chi Xiaoning's never-before-seen archival footage, production was halted for four years until Hong Kong's M+, M+ Museum untangled complicated ownership rights. Andrew Cohen (filmmaker)
Andrew "Andy" Cohen (born March 16, 1965) is a three-time Emmy nominated independent filmmaker and journalist. The founder of AC Films Inc, Cohen has directed, written, and produced feature-length and short-form films. He produced and co-wrote his first film in 1996, Gaylen Ross' ''Dealers Among Dealers'', about the New York City diamond business. Cohen would later co-write and produce Ross' 2008 documentary '' Killing Kasztner'' on the life and assassination of Rezso Kasztner. Huang Rui
Huang Rui (born 1952) is a Chinese artist known for his social and cultural criticism. Life and work Huang Rui was born in Beijing in 1952. During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent at the age of 16 to Inner Mongolia where he worked as a farmer. He later returned to Beijing, working in a leather company until 1979. There, he studied art briefly at Beijing Worker's Cultural Center. Huang Rui was a founding member of the Chinese avant-garde art group The Stars Art Group which included artists Wang Keping, Ai Weiwei, Mao Lizi, Ma Desheng and Li Shuang and was active in from 1979 to 1983. This groundbreaking group of amateur artists was the first publicly active art collective to protest government censorship after the Cultural Revolution. Wei Jingsheng
Wei Jingsheng (; born 20 May 1950) is a Chinese human rights activist and dissident. He is best known for his involvement in the Chinese democracy movement. He is most prominent for having authored the essay "The Fifth Modernization", which was posted on the Democracy Wall in Beijing in 1978. As punishment for writing his manifesto, Wei was arrested and convicted of "counter-revolutionary" activities, and he was detained as a political prisoner from 1979 to 1993. Briefly released in 1993, Wei continued to engage in his dissident activities by speaking to visiting journalists, and as punishment, he was imprisoned again from 1994 to 1997, making it a total of 18 years he has spent in various prisons. Ma Desheng, born 1952 in Beijing, is a Chinese artist and one of the founding members of the Stars Group. After being arrested for his role in arranging the group's first exhibition and repressions against "liberal thinkers", the artist relocated to Paris in 1986. Gaylen Ross
Gaylen Ross (born August 15, 1950) is an American director, writer, producer and actress, best known for playing Francine Parker in the 1978 horror film '' Dawn of the Dead'' and also noted for directing the 2008 documentary '' Killing Kasztner''. Background Ross was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1967. She studied at Monterey Peninsula College in California, and later received her BA from The New School for Social Research in Literature. She was managing editor of the poetry journal, Antaeus and Ecco Press from 1975 to 1977. Ross holds citizenship in the United States and Israel.
