''Behind The Mask'' is a 1946 American comedy-mystery film directed by Phil Karlson and starring Kane Richmond and Barbara Read. It was the second in a series of three films released by Monogram in 1946 starring Richmond as the crimefighter The Shadow, the others being ''The Shadow Returns'' and ''The Missing Lady''. Synopsis Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow, has to clear his name of the murder of a blackmailing newspaper reporter by solving the crime himself. Phil Karlson
Phil Karlson (born Philip N. Karlstein; July 2, 1908 – December 12, 1982) was an American film director. Karlson directed '' 99 River Street'', ''Kansas City Confidential'' and ''Hell's Island'', all with actor John Payne, in the early 1950s. Other films include '' The Texas Rangers'' (1951), ''The Phenix City Story'' (1955), '' 5 Against the House'' (1955), ''Gunman's Walk'' (1958), ''The Young Doctors'' (1961) and '' Walking Tall'' (1973). Biography Early life Karlson was the son of Irish actress Lillian O'Brien. His father was Jewish. He attended Marshall High School and studied painting at Chicago's Art Institute. James Cardwell (born Albert Paine Cardwell; November 21, 1921 – January 31, 1954) was an American actor who appeared in more than 20 Hollywood films in the 1940s. Career Cardwell is probably best known for his debut as George Sullivan in 1944's Oscar-nominated ''The Fighting Sullivans'', based on the true story of five navy brothers who died in action together when their ship was torpedoed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. A ''whodunit'' or ''whodunnit'' (a colloquial elision of "Who asdone it?") is a complex plot-driven variety of detective fiction in which the puzzle regarding who committed the crime is the main focus. Leonard Michael Maltin (born December 18, 1950) is an American film critic and film historian, as well as an author of several mainstream books on cinema, focusing on nostalgic, celebratory narratives. He is perhaps best known for his book of film capsule reviews, ''Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide'', published annually from 1969 to 2014.
