''Behind Masks'' is a 1921 American silent drama film directed by Frank Reicher. It was written by Kathryn Stuart based upon the 1909 novel ''Jeanne of the Marshes'' by E. Phillips Oppenheim. The film stars Dorothy Dalton, Frederick Vogeding, William P. Carleton, Julia Swayne Gordon, Gladys Valerie, and Kempton Greene. The film was released on July 24, 1921, by Paramount Pictures. Frank Reicher
Frank Reicher (born Franz Reicher; December 2, 1875 – January 19, 1965) was a German-born American actor, director and producer. He is best known for playing Captain Englehorn in the 1933 film ''King Kong''. Early life Reicher was born in Munich, Germany, the son of actor Emanuel ReicherUS Passport Application August 4, 1922 and Hedwig Kindermann, a popular German prima donna who was a daughter of the famous baritone August Kindermann. Reicher's parents divorced in 1881 and his mother died two years later while at Trieste. His half-sister, Hedwiga Reicher, would also become a Hollywood actor. His half-brother Ernst Reicher was popular as gentleman detective Stuart Webbs in the early German cinema of the 1910s. Frank Reicher immigrated to the States in 1899 and became a naturalized American citizen some twelve years later. Studio System by Gracenote, formerly known as Baseline StudioSystems, is an American e-commerce company. It was founded in 1982 and licenses its commercial entertainment database, known as Studio System. It is owned by Gracenote, a subsidiary of Nielsen Holdings. Gladys Valerie (June 27, 1890 – September 1972) was an American singer and actress. She worked during the silent film era. Life and career Valerie was born Gladys Valerie Hays, on 27 June 1890, in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Rudolph A Hays and Edith Ida Hays, nee Koon. She was raised and educated in New York City. On the 30th June 1914, Gladys was married to Mark Barth, a teacher, in Manhattan. In 1919, Valerie sang at a benefit concert for blind soldiers. In the ''Harrisburg Telegraph'', it was written that "Gladys Valerie sang at a concert given for the benefit of blind soldiers, and judging by the warm reception which the audience accorded her, Miss Valerie's voice has lost none of its original beauty since her sojourn in the silent drama.
