Irish ( Standard Irish: ), also known as Gaelic, is a Goidelic language of the Insular Celtic branch of the Celtic language family, which is a part of the Indo-European language family. Irish is indigenous to the island of Ireland and was the population's first language until the 19th century, when English gradually became dominant, particularly in the last decades of the century. Irish is still spoken as a first language in a small number of areas of certain counties such as Cork, Donegal, Galway, and Kerry, as well as smaller areas of counties Mayo, Meath, and Waterford. James Begg
James Begg (31 October 1808 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland – 29 September 1883) was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly 1865/66. Life He was born in the manse at New Monkland the son of James Begg of the Church of Scotland. He studied Divinity at Glasgow University graduating MA in 1824 and was licensed by the Presbytery of Hamilton in 1829 and was ordained as a minister by the Church of Scotland at Maxwelltown in Dumfriesshire in 1830. In 1831 he became assistant to Rev Dr Jones at Lady Glenorchy's Church in Edinburgh, and in 1832 moved to the Middle Parish Church in Paisley before being translated back to Edinburgh to serve Liberton parish in 1835. Begg left the established Church of Scotland at the Disruption of 1843. William Begg
William Begg (31 May 1821 – 26 July 1889) was a ship's captain in the merchant navy and as a privateer who made many voyages between England, Africa, the Far East and Adelaide, South Australia, where he later settled and had success as a businessman in Port Adelaide. History Begg was born in Montrose, Scotland, the son of Captain Robert Begg, was apprenticed as ship's carpenter and served as a seaman for several years before around 1840 being put in charge of a cargo boat shipping timber from the Baltic. In 1855 he was appointed captain of the ''Sebastian'' (426 tons) on the India route, calling in at Adelaide and Mauritius on the return voyage. Neil Begg
Sir Neil Colquhoun Begg (13 April 1915 – 25 June 1995) was a New Zealand paediatrician, historian and cricketer. He played three first-class matches for the Otago cricket team after the beginning of World War II, but he is most noted as a paediatrician and an historian. He served as director of medical services for the Plunket Society from 1956 to 1977, and, with his brother Charles, wrote four books on the history of Fiordland. He chaired the New Zealand Historic Places Trust between 1978 and 1986. John Begg
John Begg, commonly known as Jack Begg, (20 September 1866 – 23 February 1937) was a Scottish architect, who practised in London, South Africa and India, before returning to Scotland to teach at Edinburgh College of Art from 1922 to 1933. Life He was born in Bo'ness the third son of John Begg (1826–1878), an ironmonger and JP. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, 1879–1883. He trained under Hippolyte Blanc and was later employed first by Alfred Waterhouse and later by Sir Robert William Edis. In 1896 he was appointed architect to the Real Estate Company of South Africa and moved to Johannesburg. He returned to Scotland due to the Boer War. He arrived in India in 1901 as Consulting Architect to Bombay. In 1906 he became Consulting Architect to the Government of India. James Livingstone Begg
James Livingstone Begg (14 September 1874 – 11 August 1958) was a Scottish geologist, paleontologist and artist, awarded the Clough Medal in 1942 and recipient of the Wollaston Fund in 1946. Begg was President of the Geological Society of Glasgow from 1935 to 1938. Life James Begg was born in Dennistoun in Glasgow in 1874 and educated at Garnethill School. He trained as an artist in Paris for three years and his paintings were accepted for exhibition in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Liverpool between 1896 and 1909 at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Walker Art Gallery. Jean Begg
Jean Begg CBE (7 October 1886 – 15 February 1971) was a New Zealand welfare worker, educator, and YWCA administrator. Early life and education Begg was born in Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand, one of the ten children of Scottish immigrants Eliza Johnstone and John Begg. Her father was a tanner and rug maker. She trained as a teacher at Dunedin Training College attended the University of Otago, and held a diploma in social work from Columbia University. Career Begg was a teacher at a missionary school and ran a health clinic in American Samoa as a young woman, and helped to establish the Samoan Nursing Service. In 1922, she represented New Zealand at the world convention of the YWCA in Philadelphia.
