Finland has a long history of beer dating back to the Middle Ages. The oldest still-existing commercial brewery in Finland and Nordic countries is Sinebrychoff, founded in 1819. The Finnish Beer Day ( fi, Suomalaisen oluen päivä) is celebrated on 13 October to commemorate the founding of the Sinebrychoff brewery and the birth of Finnish beer. The largest Finnish brewers are Hartwall, Olvi and Sinebrychoff. Most of the beers brewed in Finland are pale lagers. Finland's standing is 9th in ''per capita'' consumption of beer. Microbreweries
Craft beer is a beer that has been made by craft breweries. They produce smaller amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and are often independently owned. Karjala
Karjala is a Finnish lager type beer manufactured by the Hartwall brewery. Karjala beer was manufactured by the cooperative shop Osuusliike Itä-Karjala owned Sortavalan panimo Oy brewery from 1932 until 1944. Production was resumed in 1948. During the 1960s, Karjala beer was already a fading brand until the Soviet Union's ambassador to Finland, Andrei E. Kovalev, stated in 1968 publicly that the label of Karjala beer evoked wrong perceptions from the war times. Karjala beer's label has the coat of arms of Karelia which features an arm wielding a straight western (Swedish) sword thrusting a Russian sabre wielded by another arm. The press noted the event with an article spanning 14 broadsheet pages, and Karjala-beer gained new steam as a brand. Lapin Kulta
Lapin Kulta (in English, Lapland Gold) is a Finnish beer brand. Lapin Kulta was also the name of the brewery in the Lapland town of Tornio, where the beer was originally brewed. The brewery was founded in 1873 under the name Torneå Bryggeri Aktiebolag (i.e., Tornio Brewery Limited Company). The brand is now owned by Hartwall, which is in turn owned by Royal Unibrew. The brand name ''Lapin Kulta'' is used for a variety of lagers of varying strengths. In 2009 the Lapland brewery was closed and since then Lapin Kulta has been brewed in the southern Finnish town of Lahti. Karhu is a Finnish beer brand owned by the Sinebrychoff brewery, part of the Carlsberg Group. ''Karhu'', meaning ''bear'' in Finnish, is a pale lager with a strong taste. Koff is the brand name used by Sinebrychoff to market a range of lager type beers. Koff, along with Karhu is one of the most sold beer brands of Sinebrychoff and Finland. Sinebrychoff's beer's biggest market rivals are the products of another large brewery Hartwall, namely Lapin Kulta and Karjala, as well as the beer of Olvi brewery: Olvi. The Koff brand name is used on the shirt of Finnish SM-liiga Ice Hockey clubs Ilves, HIFK, TPS and Espoo Blues as part of a marketing sponsorship deal.
