Been Here And Gone
''Been Here and Gone'' is Thalia Zedek's debut solo album, following the demise of Come, her previous band. Background Released in 2001 by Matador and P-Vine Records, the album was produced by Bryce Goggin and Thalia Zedek at Higher Power Recording, Goggin's recording studio in a de-sanctified church along the Hudson River, south of Albany, NY. The recording of the album took place in March 2001. After the break up of Come, Zedek "wanted to play in a band where hecould hear erelf sing and not have to wear earplugs." She began playing solo live shows, singing in diverse styles with different collaborators, often including various covers. Eventually, she started playing with longtime associate Beth Heinberg on piano, with David Michael Curry ( Empty House Cooperative, Willard Grant conspiracy, Will Oldham) soon joining them on the viola. Not long after, Daniel Coughlin got involved and became the project's drummer. The title of the album came from an old copy of Freder ...

Thalia Zedek
Thalia Zedek (born 1961) is an American singer and guitarist. Active since the early 1980s, she has been a member of several notable alternative rock groups, including Live Skull and Uzi (band), Uzi both of which, according to ''Spin (magazine), Spin'' magazine, "made big noise in the underground", and Come (American band), Come. Critic Heather Phares writes that Zedek's music can be defined by "the permanent, aching rasp in her voice, her guitar's bluesy bite, the startlingly clear-eyed lyrics about life and loss." Biography Zedek grew up in the metropolitan area of Washington, D.C. She attended Springbrook High School in Maryland, where she played clarinet in the marching band under band director Charles Sickafus. The early punk era of the late 1970s in which she came of age, and in particular Patti Smith, contributed deeply to the formation of her musical aesthetic. While still at high school, she would travel to New York City with her brother, Dan Zedek, to see Smith perfo ...

Willard Grant Conspiracy (WGC) was an alt-country band based originally in Boston, Massachusetts and later near Palmdale, California, U.S.. The band operated as a collective, with vocalist and songwriter Robert Fisher the only permanent member throughout its existence. Fisher's voice and Americana style have been compared to both John Cale and Johnny Cash, with most songs being acoustic. History The band was originally formed in Boston in 1995, by North Hollywood, California-raised Robert Fisher (born Robert Neil Fisher, September 9, 1957–February 12, 2017), and Paul Austin. The two had previously collaborated since the early 1980s in Portland, Maine, and in the Flower Tamers. They added guitarist Sean O'Brien to record their debut album, ''3 AM Sunday at Fortune Otto's'', issued on Foster's own Dahlia label. For their 1998 album, ''Flying Low'', released on Rykodisc, the trio added James Apt (guitar), David Michael Curry (viola), Erich Groat (mandolin) and Matt Griffi ...

Luiz Bonfá
Luiz Floriano Bonfá (17 October 1922 – 12 January 2001) was a Brazilian guitarist and composer. He was best known for the music he composed for the film ''Black Orpheus''. Biography Luiz Floriano Bonfá was born on October 17, 1922, in Rio de Janeiro. He began studying with Uruguayan classical guitarist Isaías Sávio at the age of 11. These weekly lessons entailed a long, harsh commute (on foot, plus two and half hours on train) from his family home in Santa Cruz, in the western rural outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to the teacher's home in the hills of Santa Teresa. Given Bonfá's extraordinary dedication and talent for the guitar, Sávio excused the youngster's inability to pay for his lessons. Bonfá first gained widespread exposure in Brazil in 1947 when he was featured on Rio's Rádio Nacional, then an important showcase for up-and-coming talent. He was a member of the vocal group Quitandinha Serenaders in the late 1940s. Some of his first compositions such as "Ranchi ...

Various Positions
''Various Positions'' is the seventh studio album by Leonard Cohen, released in December 1984 (and February 1985). It marked not only his turn to the modern sound and use of synthesizers (particularly on the opening track), but also, after the harmonies and backing vocals from Jennifer Warnes on the previous ''Recent Songs'' (1979), an even greater contribution from Warnes, who is credited equally to Cohen as vocalist on all of the tracks. Background After recording ''Recent Songs'', Cohen did not record again for five years and published no new writing until ''Book of Mercy'' in 1984. Asked by ''Mojo (magazine), Mojo''s Sylvie Simmons about this period of inactivity in 2001, the singer replied, "My children were living in the South of France and I spent a lot of time visiting them. The pieces in ''Book of Mercy'' were coming and I was, slowly, writing the album that ended up as ''Various Positions''." Cohen did write and star in the 1983 made-for-TV musical ''I Am a Hotel'', w ...

Dance Me To The End Of Love
"Dance Me to the End of Love" is a 1984 song by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen. It was first performed by Cohen on his 1984 album ''Various Positions''. It has been recorded by various artists and in 2009 was described as "trembling on the brink of becoming a standard." Leonard Cohen original version "Dance Me to the End of Love" is a 1984 song by Leonard Cohen and first recorded by him for his 1984 album ''Various Positions''. The song follows a typical Greek "Hasapiko" dance path, most probably inspired by Cohen's long-lasting affiliation to the Greek island of Hydra. It has since been recorded by various artists, and has been described as "trembling on the brink of becoming a standard". Although structured as a love song, "Dance Me to the End Of Love" was in fact inspired by the Holocaust. In a 1995 radio interview, Cohen said of the song: In 1996, Welcome Books published the book ''Dance Me to the End of Love'', as part of its "Art & Poetry" series, featuring the lyrics of ...

Gently, Down The Stream
''Gently, Down The Stream'' is the fourth and final album by Boston indie rock band Come. __TOC__ History Recorded and mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie at Fort Apache in 1997 during the month of June and released in early February 1998, ''Gently, Down the Stream'' is Come's fourth and, as it would eventually transpire, final album. As its predecessor, 1996's Near-Life Experience, a number of different musicians joined Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw to fill the void caused by the departure of drummer Arthur Johnson and bassist Sean O'Brien, the band's original rhythm section. Winston Bramen, who would later work with the Thalia Zedek Band and with Chris Brokaw in Consonant, played bass, whilst Daniel Coughlin was in charge of percussion and drums. Coughlin would also go on to tour and record 4 more records with Zedek's solo project, the Thalia Zedek Band until leaving in 2008. The name of the album can be seen as either a reference to the title of Su Friedrich's 1981 short film ''Gent ...

Brown of Tortoise and Gastr Del Sol, the other half recorded with Kevin Coultas and Tara Jane O'Neil of Rodan and The Sonora Pine. Other contributors to the album included Edward Yazijian from Kustomized and Jeff Goddard from Karate, both rock bands hailing from Boston, MA. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. But jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz (a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisationa ...

Blues
Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads from the African-American culture. The blues form is ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, and is characterized by the call-and-response pattern (the blues scale and specific chord progressions) of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. Blue notes (or "worried notes"), usually thirds, fifths or sevenths flattened in pitch, are also an essential part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect known as the groove. Blues as a genre is also characterized by its lyrics, bass lines, and instrumentation. Early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current str ...
