Beehive Sculptures (Utah State Capitol)
Two sculptures of beehives are installed outside the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The artworks were presented to the state by the Kennecott Copper Corporation on July 24, 1976. They are located on the grand staircase on the south side of the Capitol. The sculptures also feature the word "Industry," the state's official motto since 1959. The beehive has a long association with the state and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A beehive is an enclosed structure in which some honey bee species of the subgenus '' Apis'' live and raise their young. Though the word ''beehive'' is commonly used to describe the nest of any bee colony, scientific and professional literature distinguishes ''nest'' from ''hive''. ''Nest'' is used to discuss colonies that house themselves in natural or artificial cavities or are hanging and exposed. ''Hive'' is used to describe an artificial/man-made structure to house a honey bee nest. Several species of ''Apis'' live in colonies, but for honey production the western honey bee (''Apis mellifera'') and the eastern honey bee (''Apis cerana'') are the main species kept in hives. The Utah State Capitol is the house of government for the U.S. state of Utah. The building houses the chambers and offices of the Utah State Legislature, the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, the State Auditor and their staffs. The capitol is the main building of the Utah State Capitol Complex, which is located on Capitol Hill, overlooking downtown Salt Lake City.
