Bedřich Moldan (born 15 August 1935, Prague, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech ecologist, publicist and politician. Moldan is professor of environmental science, founder and director of the Charles University Environment Center. From 2001 to 2004 coordinating lead author of Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. From 1990 to 1991, Bedřich Moldan was the first Minister of Environment of the Czech Republic, then part of Czechoslovakia. He is a founding member of the Civic Democratic Party (Czech Republic), Civic Democratic Party. In 2004 he was elected to the Senate of the Czech Republic. In 2010 he received the SCOPE-Zhongyu Environmental Awards, SCOPE-Zhongyu Environmental Award for lifetime achievement. External links Bedřich Moldan - Official website

The Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic () is a government ministry, which was established in 1990, and is the highest body for nature and environmental protection in the Czech Republic. History This ministry was established in 1990, before which the environment was divided between the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Forestry and Water Management (within the Czech Socialist Republic). Before the Velvet Revolution, the Ministry of the Interior was briefly called MVŽP — the Ministry of the Interior and the Environment. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) is a major assessment of the human impact on the environment, called for by the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2000, launched in 2001 and published in 2005 with more than $14 million of grants. It popularized the term ecosystem services, the benefits gained by humans from ecosystems. History During the 1990s, international conventions such as the UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention to Combat Desertification identified the need for a global scientific ecosystem assessment. There had been advances in resource economics with little effect on environmental policy. In November 1998, UNEP, NASA, and the World Bank published a study called "Protecting our Planet, Securing our Future: Linkages Among Global Environmental Issues and Human Needs".
