Bedford Speedway
Bedford Speedway is a 5/8 mile (1 km) oval, semi-banked, clay, race track located in Bedford County, near Bedford, Pennsylvania. The track is also known as the Bedford Fairgrounds Speedway and is host to the Great Bedford County Fair. The track hosts the All Star Circuit of Champions, World of Outlaws Late Model Series. History Bedford Speedway held its first racing event on September 4, 1936 during the Great Bedford Fair and continues to operate as the oldest active dirt speedway in Pennsylvania. Competitors at the track include Indy 500 winners Bill Holland, Jimmy Bryan, and Mario Andretti. The track held a single race each year at the annual fair until the 1960s. The track held an annual American Automobile Association (AAA) "big car" (now sprint car) race until the AAA stopped sanctioning in 1955. United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) is a short track motor racing sanctioning body in the United States that sanctions short track racing on dirt race tracks from 1/5 mile (0.3 km) in length to in length. UMP currently sanctions eight different racing divisions on over 100 tracks in 19 states and one province in Canada. UMP was created in 1984 by Bob Memmer. Classes UMP began by sanctioning UMP Late Model and UMP Modified cars. UMP Modified cars are quite similar in appearance to IMCA Modified cars. The ''Altoona Mirror'' is a daily newspaper located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is the hometown newspaper for Altoona and serves all of Blair County as well as parts of surrounding counties. Bedford, Pennsylvania
Bedford is a borough and spa town in and the county seat of Bedford County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located west of Harrisburg, the state capital, and east of Pittsburgh. Bedford's population was 2,861 at the 2020 census. History The vicinity of Bedford was inhabited by Euro-American 'Indian' traders in the late 1740s and early 1750s. Actual settlers did not appear in the region until after Forbes Road was cut to enable the Forbes Expedition to reach Fort Duquesne in 1758. A village of sorts, created by the suttlers who followed the British Army, grew up around the fort, which was located two miles to the west of the Raystown trading post.
