Baron Beaverbrook
Baron Beaverbrook, of Beaverbrook in the Province of New Brunswick in the Dominion of Canada and of Cherkley in the County of Surrey, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1917 for the prominent media owner and politician Sir Max Aitken, 1st Baronet. He had already been created a baronet, of Cherkley in the County of Surrey, on 3 July 1916. When Aitken died, his son disclaimed the title three days later, stating that "there shall only be one Lord Beaverbrook in my lifetime". Since 1985, the titles are held by the latter's son, the third Baron. The first Baron Beaverbrook's daughter Janet Gladys Aitken was the mother of John Edward Aitken Kidd, who is the father of Jemma Wellesley, Marchioness of Douro, and Jodie Kidd. Another member of the Aitken family is the Conservative politician Jonathan Aitken. He is the great-nephew of the first Baron Beaverbrook. Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook
William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (25 May 1879 – 9 June 1964), generally known as Lord Beaverbrook, was a Canadian-British newspaper publisher and backstage politician who was an influential figure in British media and politics of the first half of the 20th century. His base of power was the largest circulation newspaper in the world, the ''Daily Express'', which appealed to the conservative working class with intensely patriotic news and editorials. During the Second World War, he played a major role in mobilising industrial resources as Winston Churchill's Minister of Aircraft Production. The young Max Aitken had a gift for making money and was a millionaire by 30. His business ambitions quickly exceeded opportunities in Canada and he moved to Britain. The ''Daily Express'' is a national daily United Kingdom middle-market newspaper printed in tabloid format. Published in London, it is the flagship of Express Newspapers, owned by publisher Reach plc. It was first published as a broadsheet in 1900 by Sir Arthur Pearson. Its sister paper, the ''Sunday Express'', was launched in 1918. In June 2022, it had an average daily circulation of 201,608. The paper rose to become the largest circulation newspaper in the world under Lord Beaverbrook, going from 2 million in the 1930s to 4 million in the 1940s. It was acquired by Richard Desmond's company Northern & Shell in 2000. Hugh Whittow was the editor from February 2011 until he retired in March 2018. Maxwell William Humphrey Aitken, 3rd Baron Beaverbrook (born 29 December 1951), is a British peer and politician. Family Maxwell Aitken is the grandson of The 1st Baron Beaverbrook and the only son of Sir Max Aitken, by his third marriage to Violet de Trafford. He was educated at Charterhouse and Pembroke College, Cambridge, and the Royal College of Defence Studies. Beaverbrook is a suburban neighbourhood in Kanata North Ward in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located within the former city of Kanata. Beaverbrook is known for its hedged houses and community facilities. The neighbourhood is bounded by the Kanata North Business Park to the north, March Road to the east, Campeau Drive to the south and Knudson Avenue & Weslock Way to the west. According to the Canada 2011 Census, the total population of the neighbourhood was 5,182. History Originally known as Kanata, Beaverbook is the first and oldest residential neighbourhood in Kanata. The area was an agricultural part of March Township until the 1960s when developer and planner Bill Teron set about creating a planned Garden City community. The first street to be developed was Tiffany Crescent in 1964. Beaver Brook Station is a Canadian rural community in Northumberland County, New Brunswick. History Beaver Brook Station was created when the Intercolonial Railway was constructed through the area north of Newcastle (now part of the city of Miramichi) in 1875. Notable people Max Aitken grew up in the nearby community of Newcastle, New Brunswick. Established in 1919, with the opening of its first store in Belfast and still a family-owned business, with direct descendants of the founders, (the third and fourth generations of the Adlestone family), the custodians. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is a public art gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. It is named after William Maxwell "Max" Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, who funded the building of the gallery and assembled the original collection. It opened in 1959 with over 300 works, including paintings by J. M. W. Turner and Salvador Dalí. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is New Brunswick's officially designated provincial art gallery. The building has undergone several expansions, the latest of which opened in 2017 via a design by Halifax-based MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. Camp Beaverbrook was a co-educational overnight summer camp located at 14117 Bottle Rock Road, Cobb, California, near Cobb Mountain, in Lake County, California from 1961 - 1985. History Camp Beaverbrook was founded in 1956 by Robert and Marian Lessman Brown of Orinda, California, opening to campers in 1961. Known as Amee and Niha, Pomo language for "Father" and "Mother," in honor of the Pomo people indigenous to the area, the Browns operated the camp until their retirement in 1979. In later years, the camp was operated by Ronald and Lynn Garrison of Auburn, California.
