Beaumont Hotham, 3rd Baron Hotham
Beaumont Hotham, 3rd Baron Hotham (9 August 1794 – 12 December 1870), was a British soldier, peer and long-standing Conservative Member of Parliament. Biography Hotham was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Beaumont Hotham of South Dalton, East Riding of Yorkshire and Philadelphia Dyke. His father died when he was five years old. He was educated at Westminster School. He joined the army as an Ensign in the Coldstream Guards in 1810, and was promoted to captain in 1813, major in 1819, lieut.-colonel in 1825; colonel in 1838, major-general in 1851, lieut.-general in 1858 and full general in 1865. He fought in the Peninsular campaign of 1812–1814, including the Battle of Salamanca and the Battle of Vitoria and was at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In 1814 he succeeded his grandfather as third Baron Hotham, but as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. William Marshall (1796–1872)
William Marshall (1796 – 16 May 1872) was a British politician. He served as the Member of Parliament for Petersfield (1826–1830), for Leominster (1830–31), for Beverley (1831–1832), for Carlisle (1835–1847), and for East Cumberland (1847–1868). He was the eldest son of the wealthy industrialist John Marshall who introduced major innovations in flax spinning and built the celebrated Marshall's Mill and Temple Works in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Their family name may have inspired the character of Richard Marshall in the 1968 film Witchfinder General, which is set in that area during the English Civil War. Beaumont Hotham, 2nd Baron Hotham
Beaumont Hotham, 2nd Baron Hotham (1737–1814) was an English judge and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1768 to 1774. Life He was the fourth son of Sir Beaumont Hotham, 7th Baronet and his wife Frances Thompson of Welton, Yorkshire; Sir Charles Hotham-Thompson, 8th Baronet was the eldest son. He became a Lord Commissioner of the Great Seal in 1783 and a Baron of the Exchequer for thirty years, from 1784 until February 1805. He became 2nd Baron Hotham in May 1813 upon the death of his elder brother, William Hotham, 1st Baron Hotham. Baron Hotham
Baron Hotham, of South Dalton in the County of York, is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1797 for the naval commander Admiral William Hotham, with remainder to the heirs male of his father. Hotham was the third son of Sir Beaumont Hotham, 7th Baronet, of Scorborough (see below), and in 1811 he also succeeded his nephew as eleventh Baronet. Lord Hotham never married and on his death in 1813 he was succeeded in both titles by his younger brother Beaumont, the second Baron and twelfth Baronet. He had previously represented Wigan in the House of Commons. Beaumont Hotham, 3rd Baron Hotham, grandson of the second Baron, fought at the Battle of Waterloo and was later a General in the Army and sat as a Member of Parliament. William Henry Harrison-Broadley
William Henry Harrison-Broadley (August 1820 – 1896) was a British Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1868 to 1885. Harrison-Broadley was the son of William Henry Harrison of Ripon and Sinderly and his wife Mary Broadley, daughter of Henry Broadley of Ferriby, and sister of Henry Broadley of Welton, who was M.P. for the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1837 to 1851. He was educated at Rugby School and at Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1865 he assumed by royal licence the additional surname of Broadley on inheriting Welton House from the Broadley family. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1867 and was a JP and a D.L. for the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Yorkshire Hussars. Christopher Sykes (MP)
Christopher Sykes (1831 – 15 December 1898) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1865 to 1892. He enjoyed the "intimate friendship" of Edward VII when Prince of Wales and Alexandra of Denmark when Princess of Wales. Sykes was the second son of Sir Tatton Sykes, 4th Baronet, and his wife Mary Ann Foulis, daughter of Sir William Foulis, 7th Baronet. His father was a popular horse breeder who bred bloodstock; however, he was an authoritarian father who bullied his children. Sykes was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Richard Bethell (10 May 1772 – 25 December 1864) was a British Tory and then Conservative Party politician from Rise in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He sat in the House of Commons between 1830 and 1841. Life He was the son of the Rev. Richard Bethell, rector of Wallingford, and was born at Isleworth. He was educated at Eton College, and matriculated at King's College, Cambridge in 1791, graduating B.A. in 1795. He was a Fellow of King's from 1794 to 1799. Arthur Duncombe (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Arthur Duncombe (24 March 1806 – 6 February 1889) was a British naval commander and Conservative politician. Background Duncombe was a younger son of Charles Duncombe, 1st Baron Feversham, and his wife Lady Charlotte, daughter of William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth. Career Duncombe served in the Royal Navy and achieved the rank of admiral. Apart from his naval career he also sat as Member of Parliament for East Retford between 1830 and 1831 and 1835 and 1852 and the East Riding of Yorkshire between 1852 and 1868. Henry Broadley (1793–1851) was a British Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1837 to 1851. Broadley was a member of the Broadley family of merchants, bankers and landowners of Hull. He was first chairman of the Hull and Selby Railway Company from 1836 to 1843. Sir James Wigram, FRS (1793–1866) was an English barrister, politician and judge. Life He was the third son of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, and younger brother name of Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet in 1832; another brother was Joseph Cotton Wigram. Born at his father's residence, Walthamstow House, Essex, on 5 November 1793, James was educated privately and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1815, gained a fellowship two years later, and proceeded M.A. in 1818.
