Bear Valley is an unincorporated community in Chester Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota, United States. Geography The community is located along Wabasha County Road 3 near Zumbro Falls. Cold Creek, a valley tributary of the nearby Zumbro River, flows through the community. 635th Street, 638th Street, and County Road 68 are also in the immediate area. Other nearby places include Zumbro Falls, Mazeppa, Oak Center, Lake City, and Bellechester. History A post office called Bear Valley was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1902. The community was so named on account of a bear sighting by early settlers in the valley. Bear Valley Grange Hall
The Bear Valley Grange Hall is a historic meeting hall in Chester Township, Minnesota, United States. It was built in 1874 for the exclusive use of a local chapter of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, an early farmers' advocacy group and fraternal organization. The chapter folded in the 1880s and the building has been used since as the Chester Town Hall. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 for having local significance in the theme of social history. It was nominated for being the only surviving Grange hall in Wabasha County—and one of only a few in Minnesota—and a rare example of a purpose-built Grange hall, as most chapters met in existing spaces like schools. Zumbro Falls is a city along the Zumbro River in Wabasha County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 207 at the 2010 census. U.S. Highway 63 and Minnesota 60 intersect in Zumbro Falls. History The original settlement on the south side of the Zumbro River dates back to 1857. A grist-mill dam built in 1866 created the falls for which the town is named. Numerous floods have swept away all but a few traces of the dam. Frequent flooding and a tornado prompted relocation to the north of the river. A railroad arrived in the relocated settlement in 1881. The city was incorporated in 1898. In September 2010, the city was flooded again, and evacuated. Many buildings were destroyed or damaged.
