Beachcomber (pen Name)
Beachcomber is a ''nom de plume'' that has been used by several journalists writing a long-running humorous column in the '' Daily Express''. It was originated in 1917 by Major John Bernard Arbuthnot MVO as his signature on the column, titled 'By the Way'. The name Beachcomber was then passed to D. B. Wyndham Lewis in 1919 and, in turn, to J. B. Morton, who wrote the column till 1975. It was later revived by William Hartston, current author of the column. "By the Way" column "By the Way" was originally a column in '' The Globe'', consisting of unsigned humorous pieces; P. G. Beachcombing is an activity that consists of an individual "combing" (or searching) the beach and the intertidal zone, looking for things of value, interest or utility. A beachcomber is a person who participates in the activity of beachcombing. Despite these general definitions, beachcombing and beachcomber are words with multiple, but related, meanings that have evolved over time. Historical usage The first appearance of the word "beachcombers" in print was in Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s ''Two Years Before the Mast'' (1840) and later referenced in Herman Melville's '' Omoo'' (1847). Beachcomber (island)
Beachcomber (also known as Tai) is a small, private island within the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji in the South Pacific, which in turn are a part of Fiji's Western Division, Fiji, Western Division. Geography Beachcomber Island, also known as Tai, is one of the resort islands of Fiji, located about 18 km west of Lautoka, the second largest city of the state, located on the main island of Viti Levu. Beachcomber is also called barefoot island, as it is common on the island not to wear shoes. The original name Tai was changed to Beachcomber Island in the 1960s, mainly to make the island more attractive to tourists. The island is mainly used for tourism, for water sports such as swimming, snorkeling, and diving as well as motor water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, and motor boating. Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanuca Islands () of Fiji are a volcanic archipelago lying to the west of Nadi and to the south of the Yasawa Islands. The group, a popular tourist destination, consists of about 20 islands, but about seven of these are covered by the Pacific Ocean at high tide.
