Beach Volleyball At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's beach volleyball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, took place at the Copacabana Stadium. The competition was held from 6 to 17 August 2016. Twenty four teams with 48 athletes around the world competed for the gold medal. The medals for the tournament were presented by Anita DeFrantz, IOC Member, Olympian one Bronze Medal, United States of America, and the gifts were presented by Dr. Ary Graça Filho, FIVB President. Qualification Pools composition Twenty-four teams were drawn in six pools of four teams. The top six teams from the FIVB beach volleyball Olympic ranking as of 12 June 2016 were seeded at the first row of each pools from pool A to F. The seventh to ninth from the ranking were drawn first in pool F, E, or D. Then, the tenth to twelfth were drawn in pool C, B, or A. Copacabana Stadium
Copacabana Stadium, also known as the Beach Volleyball Arena ( pt, link=no, Arena de Vôlei de Praia), was a temporary stadium located on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that hosted the beach volleyball competition of the 2016 Summer Olympics. It was erected in 2016 specifically for the Olympic Games and was planned to be dismantled after the Games. It opened on 26 July 2016 and had a seating capacity of 12,000. Predecessor The site has previously been used for other international sports competitions, using temporary facilities. In 2007, the site hosted the 2007 Pan American Games' beach volleyball, triathlon and aquatic marathon competitions, it also hosted same sports at the 2011 Military World Games. Ary da Silva Graça Filho is a Brazilian former volleyball player and the current president of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). He was a member of Brazil’s national team from 1963 to 1968. Before presidency of FIVB, Graça was President of the Confederación Sudamericana de Voleibol (CSV) from 2003 to 2012 and Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) from 1997 to 2012. Karla Borger
Karla Borger (born 22 November 1988 in Heppenheim) is a German beach volleyball player. She won a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships alongside her teammate Britta Büthe. In 2014 they won the German Championship. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she competed in women's beach volleyball with teammate Britta Büthe. They were defeated by the Brazilian team of Larissa França and Talita Antunes in the round of 16. After Büthe quit professional beach volleyball in 2016, Borger teamed up with Margareta Kozuch until 2018. Taliqua Clancy
Taliqua Clancy (born 25 June 1992) is an Australian volleyball and beach volleyball player who represented Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in beach volleyball, partnered with Louise Bawden. She is the first Indigenous Australian volleyball player to represent Australia at the Olympics. Clancy plays as a left-side blocker. Early life Clancy was born in Kingaroy, Queensland, into a family of Indigenous Australian descent ( Wulli Wulli and Goreng Goreng). She spent the first 15 years of her life in Kingaroy. Louise Bawden (born 7 August 1981) is an Australian volleyball and beach volleyball player. She represented Australia at the 2000 Summer Olympics in indoor volleyball, finishing in 9th. She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics in beach volleyball, but she and team-mate Becchara Palmer did not qualify from the pool stage. Marleen Van Iersel
Marleen Maria van Iersel (born 7 January 1988) is a Dutch professional beach volleyball player born in Breda. Career Iersel began her career playing indoor volleyball before switching to the beach volleyball in 2001. In 2003, she was selected by the Sourcy Volleybalschool. With her playing partner Jennifer Waninge she qualified for the Pattaya Under-18 World Championships in Thailand finishing in fifth place. In 2004 Iersel again qualified for the Under-18 World Championships in Termoli partnering with Margo Wiltens. This time they reached the semi finals finishing in fourth position. Madelein Meppelink (born 29 November 1989 in Rhenen) is a Dutch beach volleyball player. Professional career From 2007 to 2009 she played with Margo Wiltens. From 2009 to 2011 she played with Marloes Wesselink. From 2011 to 2013 she played with Sophie van Gestel. Sarah Lindsey Pavan (born August 16, 1986) is a Canadian beach volleyball and former indoor volleyball player. She was part of the Canada women's national volleyball team at the 2010 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Japan. With Melissa Humana-Paredes she won the women's gold medal at the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships. Heather Bansley (born September 13, 1987) is a Canadian beach volleyball player, playing as a left-side defender. She has been named FIVB Best Defensive Player of the World Tour in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Larissa França Maestrini (born April 14, 1982) is a beach volleyball player from Brazil. She is the all-time leader of beach volleyball titles, with 57 FIVB career gold medals, including the 2011 Beach Volleyball World Championships with Juliana Felisberta and the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour with Talita Antunes. Talita Antunes da Rocha (born August 29, 1982) is a Brazilian beach volleyball player, playing as a blocker. She was FIVB rookie of the year in 2005, and World Tour Winner twice, in 2013 and 2015. Career Born in Aquidauana, Antunes caught the attention of Olympic Champion Jackie Silva at the age of 19. From the first time they played together, in Maceió in 2001, Jackie was impressed with Antunes' style and invited the young player to partner with her in 2002.
