Bayville, New York
Bayville (sometimes also referred to as Pine Island) is a village located in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 6,669 at the 2010 census. The Incorporated Village of Bayville is located on the Long Island Sound facing Greenwich, Connecticut. History Bayville incorporated as a village in 1919 during the incorporated village movement which allowed many larger estate owners on Long Island to establish political and security control over their domains. Like many other Long Island communities, Bayville was first occupied by the Matinecock Indians and was known as Oak Neck and Pine Island. In 1658, Oyster Bay resident Daniel Whitehead purchased the land from the tribes. By 1745, the land was split among 23 men, who mainly grew asparagus. Bayville Bridge
The Bayville Bridge is a long drawbridge carrying Ludlam Avenue/West Shore Road, connecting the villages of Bayville and Mill Neck in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York, United States, while passing over Mill Neck Creek and Oyster Bay Harbor. The bridge is owned and maintained by Nassau County, and is a major landmark and tourist attraction within Mill Neck and Bayville. History Current bridge The current Bayville Bridge was built in 1938, replacing an earlier span which had been deemed to be "inadequate" in a survey, showing an increase in vehicular traffic; it is the fourth bridge in this location. The bridge suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and repairs were completed in 2013. As of 2016, the bridge carried an average of 9,128 vehicles per day. Mill Neck, New York
Mill Neck is a village in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. History Mill Neck incorporated as a village in 1925. Many Gold Coast-era estates were constructed in Mill Neck during the Gold Coast era. Mill Neck Village Hall, which also houses the village's branch of the United States Post Office, is located in the former station house of the Mill Neck Long Island Rail Road station. Matinecock (tribe)
Metoac is an erroneous term used by some to group together the Munsee-speaking Lenape (west), Quiripi-speaking Unquachog (center) and Pequot-speaking Montaukett (east) American Indians on what is now Long Island in New York state. The term was invented by amateur anthropologist and U.S. Congressman Silas Wood in the mistaken belief that the various native settlements on the island each comprised distinct tribes. Instead, Indian peoples on Long Island are descended from two major language and cultural groups of the many Algonquian peoples who occupied Atlantic coastal areas from present-day Canada through the American South. The bands on Long Island in the west were related to the Lenape. Those to the east were more related culturally and linguistically to tribes of New England across Long Island Sound, such as the Pequot. Interlaken, New York
Interlaken is a village in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. The name is related to the village's position between two lakes. The Village of Interlaken is in the northern part of the Town of Covert and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History First settled in the late 1790s and early 1800s, the Village of Interlaken was home to many families from the New England and New Jersey areas. Early businesses included hotels, blacksmiths, post office, bank, and in time the railroad station. All designed to support the local families and the farmers from the surrounding area.
