Bayrampaşa Prison
The Bayrampaşa Prison ( tr, Bayrampaşa Cezaevi) is a former prison in the Bayrampaşa district of Istanbul Province in Turkey. It was established in 1968 in an area of 120.000m². History The construction of the prison was started 1956. 12 years later, in 1968, it was opened with the name Sağmalcılar Prison ( tr, Sağmalcılar Cezaevi). Inmates of the closing Sultanahmet Jail were moved to Sağmalcılar. In late 2000, many prisoners across Turkey went on a hunger strike to protest against a cell system in F-type Prisons. On 19 December 2000, an operation called "Hayata Dönüş Operasyonu" was launched in those prisons, which left 32 people dead including 12 prisoners in the Bayrampaşa Prison. The Turkish Ministry of Justice decided to close the prison because of its works aiming to "close old prisons which not meet contemporary standards and have a bad image, and moving detainees and convicts to newly built modern prisons." Bayrampaşa
Bayrampaşa (pronounced ) is a suburban district of Istanbul, Turkey on the European side of the city. The mayor is Atila Aydıner (AK Party). History Up to 1936, Bayrampaşa was part of Fatih district. It was then part of Eyüp district between 1936 and 1990. Until 1970, the area was known as Sağmalcılar, when a large outbreak of cholera, caused by pollution of the Ottoman-built water supply by new buildings and factories, led to the area being quarantined. Following this incident, the name Sağmalcılar became synonymous with cholera, so the district was renamed Bayrampaşa, after the 17th-century Ottoman grand vizier Bayram Pasha. Little of the Ottoman water system, which was built by Mimar Sinan, remains today. On 1 December 2015, an explosion occurred near Bayrampaşa metro station, leaving several injured. Sultanahmet Jail
Sultanahmet Jail ( tr, Sultanahmet Cezaevi), a former prison in Istanbul, Turkey, is now the luxury Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet. It is located in Sultanahmet neighborhood of Fatih district on the historical peninsula. History Built in 1918/1919, it was the first jailhouse in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, constructed in a contemporary concept considering the regulation of the daily life and relationship with the outside of inmates, who were awaiting trial or serving brief sentences. The building was designed in Turkish neoclassical style in the beginning of the period called "First National Architecture". It was built next to the courthouse building, which was constructed in 1845 initially as university ( ota, Darülfünun). An inscription in Ottoman language upon the main gate of the building states the name of the facility as the "Dersaadet Murder Jail" ( ota, Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhanesi). F-type Prisons
F-Type-Prisons, officially called F-type High Security Closed Institutions for the Execution of Sentences (''F tipi cezaevi / F Tipi Yüksek Güvenlikli Kapalı Ceza İnfaz Kurumu''), are high-security prisons designated by Turkish Law 5275 on the Execution of Sentences. Those sentenced to F-type prisons include political prisoners, members of armed organizations, people convicted of drug offences or organized crimes, and those sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. Aggravated life imprisonment (''ağırlaştırılmış müebbet hapis cezası'') replaced the death penalty when it was abolished in 2002 and according to Article 47 of the Turkish Penal Code (TPC) it is a life sentence.
