Bayley Avenue Historic District
The Bayley Avenue Historic District is a residential historic district in central Platteville, Wisconsin. The district encompasses 29 homes and a local park. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. History The land that the district is now located on was once owned by John H. Rountree, the founder of Platteville. Contributing buildings in the district were constructed from 1853 to 1940; the majority were built in the 1890s and 1910s, when Platteville experienced significant growth due to local zinc mining. Nearly half of the houses in the district have Queen Anne designs, as the style was popular across the United States in the 1890s. Platteville, Wisconsin
Platteville is the largest city in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin. The population was 11,836 at the 2020 census, up from 11,224 at the 2010 census. Much of this growth is likely due to the enrollment increase of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. It is the principal city of the Platteville Micropolitan Statistical area, which has an estimated population of 49,681. Platteville is located atop the greater Platte River valley in the southern Driftless Region of Wisconsin, an area known for its karst topography and rolling hills. History Platteville was settled by pioneers and early lead miners along inlets and flat groves of The Rountree Branch and Platte River, which form part of the greater Upper Mississippi River system in the southwest Driftless Region of Wisconsin.
