Bayahíbe
Bayahíbe is a town in the Dominican Republic, located about east of La Romana, Dominican Republic, La Romana on the shore of the Caribbean Sea with 5,618 inhabitants (2022). Founded as a fishing village in 1874 by Juan Brito and his family, who came from Puerto Rico, the town is now a tourist destination. Etymology Bayahíbe is an indigenous word. Its meaning is not known for sure, but there are many names that include the Taíno language, Tainos word "Baya." "Baya" is the name given to a bivalve mollusk, like clams that are glued to the rocks or roots of mangrove trees. "Jib" (or "hib") is the name of a sieve manufactured from sticks used to sift cassava flour. Tourism Bayahíbe Beach, a public beach, is located less than a mile from the town center, and Dominicus Beach is in about three miles' distance. Pereskia Quisqueyana
''Leuenbergeria quisqueyana'', commonly known as the Bayahibe rose, is a species of cactus that is endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, in the Dominican Republic. Taxonomy The species was discovered by the French botanist Henri Alain Liogier in 1977 as ''Pereskia quisqueyana'', the description being published in 1980. He named it ''quisqueyana'', in honor of the Dominican Republic, which is also referred to natively as '' Quisqueya''. Description ''Leuenbergeria quisqueyana'' is a dioecious cactus that resembles a shrub and reaches up to in height. Its trunk is surrounded by groups of spines which erupt in bunches. Saona Island
Saona Island ( es, Isla Saona) is a 110 square kilometer tropical island located off the south-east coast in Dominican Republic's La Altagracia province. It is a government-protected nature reserve and is part of '' Parque Nacional Cotubanamá''. There are two permanent settlements, the towns of ''Mano Juan'' and ''Catuano.'' Mano Juan is a fishing village with wooden houses and "Catuano beach" has a detachment of the navy. The island is a popular destination for tourists from all over the Dominican Republic, who arrive in fleets of catamarans and small motorboats on organized excursions every day. La Altagracia Province
La Altagracia () is the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. Punta Cana is located on the eastern shores of this province. The province was part of the old La Altagracia Province, which split into 2, La Altagracia Province and La Romana Province on February 27, 1961. Audrey Mestre (11 August 1974 – 15 October 2002) was a French world record-setting freediver. Early life Mestre was born in Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis, to a family of snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts. She began swimming when she was a baby and won a gold medal in a 54-meter swimming competition at age 1 month. She became a seasoned scuba diver by age thirteen but did not get full certification until her sixteenth birthday due to French law.
