Bavarian D II
The newer Class D II engines of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn'') were goods train tank locomotives. The designation 'D II' was given to these locomotives only after all the older Class D II engines had been mustered out. Of the 73 engines that were built, 70 entered the Deutsche Reichsbahn as Class 89.6; the remaining 3 transferred to the Polish State Railways (PKP) in 1919 as Class TKh101. The majority were still working even after the Second World War. The last one was not taken out of service until 1960. Maffei (company)
Maffei was a manufacturer of railway locomotives based in Munich, Germany. Established in 1836, it prospered for nearly a century before going bankrupt in 1930 and becoming amalgamated with the firm of Krauss to form Krauss-Maffei. Following another seventy years of prosperity Krauss-Maffei merged with Demag and Mannesmann in 1999, the resulting conglomerate in turn being sold to Siemens AG. Perhaps J. A. Maffei's most famous product was the S3/6 4-6-2 locomotive of 1908. In 1836, Joseph Anton, Ritter von Maffei established the "J. A. Maffei" locomotive works in the English Garden district of Munich. The aim was to make Bavaria competitive in the machine industry. From these small beginnings a world-renowned locomotive works eventually developed. In 1864 they delivered their 500th locomotive. Royal Bavarian State Railways
The Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königliche Bayerische Staats-Eisenbahnen'' or ''K.Bay.Sts.B.'') was the state railway company for the Kingdom of Bavaria. It was founded in 1844. The organisation grew into the second largest of the German state railways (after that of the Prussian state railways) with a railway network of 8,526 kilometres (including the Palatinate Railway or ''Pfalzbahn'') by the end of the First World War. Following the abdication of the Bavarian monarchy at the end of the First World War, the 'Royal' title was dropped and on 24 April 1920 the Bavarian State Railway (''Bayerische Staatseisenbahn''), as it was now called, was merged into the newly formed German Reich Railways Authority or Deutsche Reichseisenbahnen as the Bavarian Group Administration (''Gruppenverwaltung Bayern''). Most tank engines also have bunkers (or fuel tanks) to hold fuel; in a tender-tank locomotive a tender holds some or all of the fuel, and may hold some water also. Bavarian D II (old)
The first class of steam locomotive to be designated the D II by the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn'') comprised small tank locomotives with two coupled axles. Because these engines were retired very early, from 1891 to 1898, their class number was reused for the six-coupled shunter introduced in 1898 and which later became the DRG Class 89.60. The original D II was the smallest standard gauge locomotive ever owned by the Bavarian State Railway. It was based on a design by Krauss which was delivered in numerous variants for different purposes to stations and construction firms. The boiler had a regulator housing behind the chimney instead of a steam dome from which the steam pipes ran to the cylinders on the outside of the boiler.
