Its headquarters are in Zeulenroda-Triebes, Thuringia. It is a family company, not listed on any stock exchange. The company was founded in Zeulenroda in 1929 by Bruno Bauerfeind as a manufacturer of medical rubber stockings. Bauernfeind (variant ''Bauerfeind'') is a German surname. It originates as a byname, literally "peasants' enemy", in the late medieval period, before that (12th century) a comparable ''Geburenhasz'' is on record. The form ''Geburnvint'' is found in the poem Der Renner () as a generic byname of "villains". Historical spelling variants include ''Pawrnfeynt, Pawrveint, Gebure vient''. Zeulenroda-Triebes is a German town in the district of Greiz in the state of Thuringia. Zeulenroda-Triebes is situated in the south of Greiz in the mountains of the Thuringian Slate Mountains (Thüringer Schiefergebirge), on the border with Saxony. The population of Zeulenroda-Triebes in 2006 was about 18,000. The largest company is Bauerfeind AG. The most famous sight in the town is the neoclassical town hall, built in 1827.
