Bauck Poppema
Bauck Poppema or ''Bauck Foppesd. of Popma'' and ''Bauck Hemmema'', born in Terschelling, died in Berlikum, Friesland 1501, was a legendary Dutch heroine, known for her defence of the fort Hemmemastate during the conflict between the Schieringers party and the Vetkopers party in 1496. Poppema was the wife of Doeke Hettes Hemmema (d. 1503), an ally of the Schieringers party. In 1496, a pregnant Poppema successfully defended the fort for a time during a siege by invaders from the city of Groningen. Eventually, however, enemy reinforcements arrived, after which the fort fell and all of Poppema's soldiers were executed. Poppema was imprisoned in Groningen, where legend holds that she gave birth to twins while chained in a dungeon. She was released in 1497. Terschelling
Terschelling (; fry, Skylge; Terschelling dialect: ''Schylge'') is a municipality and an island in the northern Netherlands, one of the West Frisian Islands. It is situated between the islands of Vlieland and Ameland. Wadden Islanders are known for their resourcefulness in using anything and everything that washes ashore. With few trees to use for timber, most of the farms and barns are built with masts recovered from shipwrecks. The islands are surrounded by shipwrecks, and even today many containers wash ashore that have blown off the decks of container ships in the North Sea. Berlikum
Berltsum () is a village in Waadhoeke municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 2,529 in January 2017. Until 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. History The village was first mentioned in 1355 as Berlichem, and means "settlement of the people of Berilo (person)". The village of Tutingum or Tutgum which was located to the north probably merged into Berltsum in the 15th century, and the name disappeared in the 19th century. Berltsum developed as a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village along the river Riedstroom several centuries before Christ. Berltsum was never a city, but did receive rights. In the 12th century, it was burnt down by the Vikings. It developed into a centre of horticulture and fruit cultivation. Jeanne Laisné (born circa 1454 ?) was a French heroine known as Jeanne Fourquet and nicknamed Jeanne Hachette ('Joan the Hatchet'). She was the daughter of a peasant. She is currently known for an act of heroism on 27 June 1472, when she prevented the capture of Beauvais by the troops of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The town was defended by only 300 men-at-arms, commanded by Louis de Balagny. The Burgundians were making an assault, and one of their number had planted a flag upon the battlements, when Jeanne, axe in hand, flung herself upon him, hurled him into the moat, tore down the flag, and revived the drooping courage of the garrison. In gratitude for this heroic deed, Louis XI instituted a procession in Beauvais called the "Procession of the Assault", and married Jeanne to her chosen lover Colin Pilon, loading them with favours.
