Battling Shaw
José Pérez Flores (October 21, 1910 – August 27, 1994) was a Mexican professional boxer better known as Battling Shaw or Benny Kid Roy. He was the first Mexican to become world champion. Professional career Shaw made his pro debut at the age of 16. He mostly fought out of Louisiana. He became the World Light Welterweight Champion after decisioning Johnny Jadick in 1933. He also fought fellow Mexican fighter and hall of fame Kid Azteca, although the exact date is unknown (Herbert Goldman's boxing encyclopedia dates the bouts as taking place in July and August 1931, but without any day numbers given; Shaw lost both bouts on points in ten rounds). Young Peter Jackson (boxer, Born 1912)
Young Peter Jackson (April 15, 1912 – April 9, 1979) was an African American boxer active from 1929 to 1939. Born Peter Martin in Los Angeles, California, he renamed himself in honor of the great colored heavyweight champ Peter Jackson and the welterweight contender Peter Jackson. The 5'7" Jackson fought as a lightweight, making his professional debut on August 14, 1929 at the Wilmington Bowl in Wilmington, California, when he knocked out Herb Yales via a knock out in the first round of a scheduled four-round bout. Jackson won the USA California State lightweight title on January 12, 1932, defeating Young Manuel (Manuel Villa I), then won the vacant Pacific Coast Lightweight title on July 25, 1933 by defeating Ah Wing Lee. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930. Monte Deadwiley (February 15, 1905 – October 26, 1961) was an American professional boxer nicknamed "Wildcat Monte" who fought as a welterweight. He was active from 1923 to 1937 and fought a recorded 313 times in his 13-year career. He has been regarded as one of the most active boxers of his time, having fought over 30 times in one-year periods throughout his career. Career Monte debuted on March 16, 1923, in a fight against Bill Bush which he won by decision. He fought a recorded 38 times in 1924 and come close to that in subsequent years. On February 12, 1924, he fought Eddie Mack at the Rialto Theatre in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Alberto "Baby" Arizmendi (March 17, 1914 – December 31, 1962) was a Mexican professional boxer and New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) featherweight world title holder in 1934. He also competed in the bantamweight and welterweight divisions. Early life and career Arizmendi was born on March 17, 1913 in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He took up boxing as early as seven or eight by some accounts to counter the effects of Polio which he had suffered from as a young child. Baby used a charging, bruising style, making him a very strong two-fisted fighter. He began boxing professionally at age 13. He took his first championship, the Mexican bantamweight title at only eighteen, a twelve round points decision against Kid Poncho in Mexico City.
