Battle Of Tapa
The Capture of Tapa ( et, Tapa vallutamine), sometimes known as the Battle of Tapa ( et, Tapa lahing), took place on 9 January 1919 in Tapa, Estonia, Tapa, Estonia, between troops of the Soviet Union, Russian Red Army and Estonia. The goal of the Estonian troops was to capture and liberate the Tapa Railway Station from occupation by Russia. Three Armoured train, armored trains (''soomusrong'') were used in the engagement, led by Captain Anton Irv, Captain , and Captain Jaan Lepp. Background On 28 November 1918, the Red Army Battle of Narva (1918), fought against the Estonian and German troops and captured Narva. The Red Army continued to capture northeastern and southeastern Estonian territory. On the Christmas Eve of 1918, the 6th Rifle Division (Soviet Union), 6th Red Rifle Division captured Tapa and its railway junction. Russian troops reached within 34 kilometers of Tallinn, Estonia. Tapa (German: ''Taps'') is a town in Tapa Parish, Lääne-Viru County, Estonia, located at the junction of the country's Tallinn–Narva (west–east) and Tallinn–Tartu– Valga (north–south) railway lines.It is an important centre of transit for freight (mainly Russian oil and timber) as well as rail passengers (mostly Estonian commuters), a home to soldiers since the 1930s. Tapa also plays an important role in training young men and women in the Estonian Defense Forces. The Valgejõgi River passes Tapa on its northeastern side. Tapa developed as a village in the 13th–14th centuries. It was first mentioned in 1482 and the Tapa knight manor () in 1629. Tapa was officially recognized as a town in 1926. In October 2005, the town merged with the municipalities of Lehtse Parish, Saksi Parish, and Jäneda Parish to form Tapa Parish. Tapa Museum was opened on 10 June 2004.
