The Battle of (the) Muottental,, german: Schlacht im Muotatal also known as the battle of the Muttental, Muotatal or Muotta, was fought in 1799, on 30 September and 1 October, during the Second Coalition, Second Coalition war as part of Suvorov's Swiss campaign. The Russian Empire, Russian troops of Andrei Rosenberg, Rosenberg's rearguard, ordered by Suvorov, stood in the Muottental (also referred to as the Muttental), now Muotatal (valley), Muotatal, covering the march of the main force, and were attacked by outnumbered French First Republic, French troops under the overall command of Masséna. French troops were more than double that of the Russian forces. It ended in a Decisive victory#Definitions, decisive Russian victory. Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm Franz von Kotzebue (russian: Алекса́ндр Евста́фиевич Коцебу́, Romanization of Russian, tr. ; 9 June 1815 – 24 August 1889) was a German Romanticism, Romantic painter of history painting, historical scenes and battle scenes. Life Alexander von Kotzebue was the son of the playwright August von Kotzebue. He was born in Königsberg. On August's death in 1819, Alexander was educated in the Cadet Corps in St Petersburg, leaving it in 1834 as a Gardeleutnant. However, four years later, in 1838, he moved to an artistic career and began his artistic training at the St Petersburg Academy under Alexander Sauerweid. He spent six years at the St Petersburg Academy and at the end of them, in 1844, exhibited his first painting, ''The Storming of Warsaw'', in St Petersburg.
