Battle Of Sao Del Indio
The Battle of El Indio Sao was a battle of the Cuban War of Independence which took place on the 31st of August 1895 in Oriente Province of Cuba. The Battle In this site of Guantánamo, 650 mambises under the command of Generals Antonio and José Maceo, fought against an enemy column of about 900 men, whose objective was to capture or kill José, because they knew that he was almost disabled and had only 50 escort men. Agustín Cebreco Sánchez (El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, 25 May 1855 - Havana, Cuba, 19 December 1924), was a Cuban major general and politician of the Mambí Army. Biography Origins and the Ten Years' War Cebreco Agustín Sánchez was born in the town of El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, on May 25 of 1855. On October 10, 1868, the Ten Years' War broke out which was the first war of independence of Cuba. Cebreco rose up in arms, not yet 15 years old, and joined the troops of the then Lieutenant Colonel José Maceo. Baconao Park is a large park region, about 60 kilometers away from the city of Santiago de Cuba, with a total surface of . History The name Baconao is related to the name of a little native who lived in the south of Cuba during the pre-Columbian period. Legend mentions a magical tree, called ''bacona'', that allowed the child to play music from the lagoon's snails. This little Cuban was known for his fishing and swimming skills, as well as playing ''Batos'' (Cuban original baseball game). The child used to sit under the ''bacona'' tree to play music from his snail. Everybody in the village was fascinated, and thought that the ability to play the music was a gift from the magical tree. Francisco de Borja Canella y Secades was a Spanish Divisional General during the 19th century. He was famously known as the "Hero of Sao del Indio" for his service during the Battle of Sao del Indio of the Cuban War of Independence and earned the Laureate Cross of San Fernando for his service there.
