Battle Of Buena Vista
The Battle of Buena Vista (February 22–23, 1847), known as the Battle of La Angostura in Mexico, and sometimes as Battle of Buena Vista/La Angostura, was a battle of the Mexican–American War. It was fought between the US invading forces, largely volunteers, under General Zachary Taylor, and the much larger Mexican Army under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. It took place near Buena Vista, a village in the state of Coahuila, about south of Saltillo, Mexico. ''La Angostura'' ("the narrow place") was the local name for the site. The outcome of the battle was ambiguous, with both sides claiming victory. Santa Anna's forces withdrew with war trophies of cannons and flags and left the field to the surprised U.S. forces, who had expected there to be another day of hard fighting. The Angostura Fortress was a Paraguayan Army fortification, located by the Pikysyry stream (a tributary of the Paraguay river), in Paraguayan territory. The Paraguayan War, /sup> (also known as the War of the Triple Alliance /sup> and the Great War /sup> in Paraguay), was a South American war fought from 1864 to 1870 between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance nations ( Argentina, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay). Angostura Fortress was a battery of Paraguayan defense line fortifications strategically located along Lomas Valentinas. The Paraguayan units surrendered the fortification on 27 December 1868, which were then occupied by Imperial Brazilian Army forces on 30 December 1868. The First Battle of Angostura took place during the Venezuelan War of Independence. The battle saw Patriot forces attempt to capture the city of Angostura, but retreat after being unable to penetrate Spanish defenses. Background A previous attempt in the Venezuelan War of Independence to capture Angostura happened in 1812, when revolutionary González Moreno and 400 soldiers attempted to negotiate with the local authorities. Negotiations broke down and fighting ensued, which failed to yield any gains for the rebels. Manuel Piar had gathered many Patriot revolutionaries to fight two battles: one to fight for the purpose of cutting communication, and the other to capture Angostura. Battle Arriving at Angostura on 18 January 1817, Manuel Piar's force, 2,000 strong, were unable to defeat the entrenched Royalist forces, which numbered at about 3,200.
