Battelle Riverfront Park
Battelle Riverfront Park is a park in downtown Columbus, Ohio, United States, near Columbus City Hall. The park was established in 1983. It is named after Gordon Battelle and was funded by the Battelle Memorial Institute. Features The park features the James W. Barney Pickaweekee Story Grove (moved from a nearby children's park) amid several monuments and memorials, including the Columbus Firefighters Memorial (1958), Spanish–American War Memorial (1937), '' Their Spirits Circle the Earth'' (1987), and '' To Honor the Immigrants'' (1992). Alfred Tibor's sculpture '' Freedom'' (1985) is also installed in the park. Several of the park's monuments and memorials were moved here from the Harry E. Richter Workers Memorial Park in 2016. Scioto Mile
The Scioto Mile is a collection of parks and trails along both banks of the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio, connecting parts of the Scioto Greenway Trail with downtown Columbus and Franklinton. The nine parks cover . History At the beginning of the 20th century, the banks of the Scioto River were lined with housing and businesses. Large civic buildings were planned and built: Columbus City Hall, the Ohio Judicial Center, and the Joseph P. Kinneary U.S. Courthouse. Broad Street (Columbus, Ohio)
Broad Street is a major thoroughfare in Central Ohio, predominantly in Franklin County and Columbus. It stretches east from West Jefferson at Little Darby Creek to Pataskala. The street is considered one of Columbus's two main roads, along with High Street. Broad Street was first laid out around 1797, when Franklinton was settled. In 1812, when Columbus was founded, a new section of the street was built in the new city. The street first connected to the rest of the settled country in 1831, when the Ohio and Erie Canal reached Columbus. ''La Santa María'' (), alternatively ''La Gallega'', was the largest of the three Spanish ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, the others being the ''Niña'' and the '' Pinta''. Her master and owner was Juan de la Cosa, a man from Santoña, Cantabria, operating in south Spanish waters. Requisitioned by order of Queen Isabella and by contract with Christopher Columbus, whom de la Cosa knew previously, the ''Santa María'' became Columbus's flagship on the voyage as long as it was afloat. The Santa Maria Ship & Museum was a museum ship in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The craft was a full-size replica of the '' Santa María'', one of three ships Christopher Columbus used in his first voyage to the Americas. The ship was displayed in Columbus from 1991 to 2014, when it had to be relocated due to the Scioto Mile project reshaping the riverbanks. Franklin Park (Columbus Park)
Franklin Park is a public park in Columbus, Ohio, United States. It is the namesake of Franklin Park, its containing neighborhood in Columbus. The park is a landmark for both the neighborhood and the Near East Side. The park encompasses filled with several ponds, an amphitheater, terraced waterfalls, a community garden, an Asian-themed garden, a picnic shelter, and playgrounds. The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens also lie within the park, a landmark of the neighborhood and the City of Columbus. Alfred Tibor
Alfred Tibor (February 10, 1920 – March 18, 2017) was a Holocaust survivor and sculptor. His artwork can be found in nearly 500 private collections and museums throughout the world, including the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem. Life Tibor was born Alfred Goldstein in Konyár, Hungary in 1920. Denied formal training because of his Jewish faith, he taught himself gymnastics in high school. "The more they were pushing me down and degrading me, the more I wanted to be better than others," he said. "I wanted to prove it: I am not a dirty Jew; I am a boy, and I have ambition." Tibor eventually qualified for the Hungarian team for the 1936 Summer Olympics, but when he went to register for the team, he was denied when the team discovered he was Jewish.
