August Batsch
August Johann Georg Karl Batsch (28 October 1761 – 29 September 1802) was a German naturalist. He was a recognised authority on mushrooms, and also described new species of ferns, bryophytes, and seed plants. Life and career Batsch was born in Jena, Saxe-Weimar to George Lorenz Bratsch and Ernestine (''nee'' Franke) Bratsch. He studied at the Jena City School, and then had private tuition. He showed an aptitude for natural sciences and drawing, and so subsequently studied medicine and philosophy at the University of Jena (now known as the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena), entering in 1772 and obtaining his doctorate in philosophy in 1781 and in medicine in 1786, his supervisor being Justus Christian Loder. Batsch was married in 1787 to Amalie Pfaundel. They had three children, Friedrich (born 1789), George Friedrich Karl (1792), and Karoline (1795). He died in 1802 after a short illness. Mieczysław Batsch
Mieczysław Józef Batsch a.k.a. Bacz (1 January 1900 in Lemberg – 9 September 1977 in Przemyśl) was a Polish soccer forward. He represented both Pogoń Lwów and the Polish National Team. Batsch was a graduate of the mechanical engineering program of Lwów's Technical University (Politechnika Lwowska). In the 1920s, while he was on the team, Pogoń won multiple national champions (1922, 1923, 1925, 1926). Together with Wacław Kuchar and Józef Garbień, he scored several goals. His career lasted from 1916 to 1929, after which he occasionally played on the team Oldboye Lwów, which consisted of soccer veterans from Lwów. On the national team he played in 11 games, scoring 1 goal. Bill Batsch
William McKinley Batsch (May 18, 1892 – December 31, 1963) was an American Major League Baseball player who pinch hit in one game for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1916. Batsch is one of only five players to walk in his only major league plate appearance and never play the field, the most famous of which is Eddie Gaedel. Career The pride of Mingo Junction, Ohio, Batsch attended Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. By 1916, Batsch, a right-handed outfielder, was with the "Pittsburgh Collegians" (presumably the University of Pittsburgh team) when the Pirates took a flyer on him. On September 9, 1916, the hometown Pirates were down 3–0 in the bottom of the eighth to the Chicago Cubs when Batsch came on to bat for pitcher Erv Kantlehner. Batsch Affair
The Batsch affair was an 1872 diplomatic incident between Haiti and Germany and an example of gunboat diplomacy. During the Franco-Prussian war, the Haitians openly showed their sympathy for France, which displeased Germany. After Germany prevailed in the war, Captain , of the frigate , arrived at Port-au-Prince on June 11, 1872, under the pretext of demanding the payment of £3,000 on behalf of two subjects of the German Empire. Without warning Batsch took possession of the two Haitian men-of-war, which, not expecting such an aggression, were lying at anchor in the harbor and unable to make the slightest resistance. Indignant at this attack, the Haitian people—in the words of poet Oswald Durand—"threw the money to the Germans as one would cast a bone to a dog." Batsch took the amount, gave back the two men-of-war, and left Port-au-Prince. But Germany's actions caused long-lived resentment.
