Batrachedridae
The Batrachedridae are a small family of tiny moths. These are small, slender moths which rest with their wings wrapped tightly around their bodies. Taxonomy The taxonomy of this and related groups is often disputed. This group was first proposed as a taxonomic rank in 1876 by Hermann von Heinemann and Maximilian Ferdinand Wocke under the name Batrachedrae. Lord Walsingham used the name Batrachedridae in 1890. Ron Hodges decided to separate a number of new species he was describing in 1966 from ''Batrachedra'' in his new genus ''Chedra'', on the basis of the adult males possessing a "single, strong, apical spine on the ampulla" (also known as the harpe). ''Chedra'' then accommodated three species: two from North America and one from Chile. Hodges furthermore described two more related genera in this paper: ''Duospina'' and ''Ifeda''. Chedra
''Chedra'' is a genus of tiny moths, belonging to the family Batrachedridae. Taxonomy Ron Hodges created the genus in 1966 to accommodate three new species: two from North America and one from Chile. These he found very similar to the genus ''Batrachedra'', but distinct on the basis of the adult males possessing a "single, strong, apical spine on the ampulla" (also known as the harpe), the females he distinguished from those of ''Batrachedra'' by the "presence of long apophyses" and the "absence of a signum and accessory pouches, and the corpus bursae being poorly set off from the ductus bursae". At the time Hodges initially classified the genus in the family Gelechioidea. Hodges designated as type species '' Chedra pensor''. Elwood Zimmerman included it in his subfamily Momphinae of the family Gelechiidae in his 1978 treatment of the microlepidoptera of Hawaii. Epimarptidae
Epimarptidae was a former, or is a possible, monotypic family of moths in the moth superfamily Gelechioidea. It can now be seen as either a synonym of family Batrachedridae, or a monotypic subfamily of that family. Taxonomy and systematics Epimarptidae was first created as a monotypic family by Edward Meyrick in 1914 to house his new genus ''Epimarptis'', with a single species from India. at Markku Savela's ''Lepidoptera and Some Other Life Forms''. Batrachedra
''Batrachedra'' is the largest genus in the moth family Batrachedridae, with representatives all over the world. The early stages of most species are unknown. The genus name is derived from the Greek words ''batrachos'', 'frog', and ''edra'', 'seat', referring to the frog-like resting posture of the adult moths. As of 2018 at least some 114 species are known to belong to the genus. Distribution There are only three species found in Europe. There is an especially high amount of biodiversity in the Indomalayan realm. Ecology Of most species little is known about the ecology, but of those of which it is known, the caterpillars across the genus use a large variety of host plants. Gelechioidea
__NOTOC__ Gelechioidea (from the type genus ''Gelechia'', "keeping to the ground") is the superfamily of moths that contains the case-bearers, twirler moths, and relatives, also simply called curved-horn moths or gelechioid moths. It is a large and poorly understood '"micromoth" superfamily, constituting one of the basal lineages of the Ditrysia.Robinson ''et al.'' (1994), Hodges (1999), O'Toole (2002) As of the 1990s, this superfamily was composed of about 1,425 genera and 16,250 species. Coleophoridae
__NOTOC__ The Coleophoridae are a family of small moths, belonging to the huge superfamily Gelechioidea. Collectively known as case-bearers, casebearing moths or case moths, this family is represented on all continents, but the majority are found in temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere. They are most common in the Palearctic, and rare in sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Australia; consequently, they probably originated (like most or all other Gelechioidea families) in northern Eurasia. They are relatively common in houses, they seek out moist areas to rest and procreate. Batrachedrodes
''Batrachedrodes'' is a genus of moths of the Momphidae family. All species of this genus are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. All six species were collected by Robert Cyril Layton Perkins and then described by Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham in 1907. He classified them in the genus ''Batrachedra'', although before publication he questioned if these species were not so distinct that they were better segregated in an independent genus. The genus was eventually split from ''Batrachedra'' by Elwood Zimmerman in his 1978 treatment of the microlepidoptera of Hawaii. The species were first considered to be part of the family Batrachedridae, but were placed in the subfamily Momphinae of the family Gelechiidae with the rest of the Batrachedridae by Zimmerman in 1978. Microlepidoptera
Microlepidoptera (micromoths) is an artificial (i.e., unranked and not monophyletic) grouping of moth families, commonly known as the 'smaller moths' (micro, Lepidoptera). These generally have wingspans of under 20 mm, and are thus harder to identify by external phenotypic markings than macrolepidoptera. They present some lifestyles which the larger Lepidoptera do not have, but this is not an identifying mark. Some hobbyists further divide this group into separate groups, such as leaf miners or rollers, stem or root borers, and then usually follow the more rigorous scientific taxonomy of lepidopterans.
