The ''Batillus''-class supertankers were a class of Tanker (ship), supertanker ships built in France in the late 1970s, with four ships of this class built between 1976 and 1979. Three of the ships were Ship breaking, scrapped after less than ten years of oil transport service each, with the fourth one scrapped in 2003. All four tankers were built in the ''Bassin C'' dock of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyards at Saint Nazaire, France. ''Batillus'' was a supertanker built in 1976 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire for the French branch of Shell Oil. The first vessel of the , she was, together with her sister ships , and ''Hellas Fos, Prairial'', one of the biggest ships in the world, surpassed in size only by (later ''Jahre Viking'', ''Happy Giant'' and ''Knock Nevis'') built in 1976, and extended in 1981, although the four ships of the ''Batillus'' class had a larger gross tonnage. ''Globtik Tokyo'' was one of three oil tankers in its class. At the time her keel was laid in 1972 she was the largest supertanker in the world at 378.85 meters (1,242 feet) and 483,684 tonnes (dwt). The draft or draught of a ship is a determined depth of the vessel below the waterline, measured vertically to its hull's lowest—its propellers, or keel, or other reference point. Draft varies according to the loaded condition of the ship. A deeper draft means the ship will have greater vertical depth below the waterline. Length overall (LOA, o/a, o.a. or oa) is the maximum length of a vessel's hull measured parallel to the waterline. This length is important while docking the ship. It is the most commonly used way of expressing the size of a ship, and is also used for calculating the cost of a marina berth (for example, £2.50 per metre LOA). Gross tonnage (GT, G.T. or gt) is a nonlinear measure of a ship's overall internal volume. Gross tonnage is different from gross register tonnage. Neither gross tonnage nor gross register tonnage should be confused with measures of mass or weight such as deadweight tonnage or displacement. Gross tonnage, along with net tonnage, was defined by the ''International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969'', adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1969, and came into force on 18 July 1982.
