''Batia lunaris'', the lesser tawny crescent, is a species of gelechioid moth. It belongs to the subfamily Oecophorinae of the concealer moth family (Oecophoridae). It is the type species of the genus ''Batia'', which is sometimes treated as monotypic. But this is not well warranted, as some other species usually placed there differ little from the Lesser Tawny Crescent. Description and ecology Its wingspan is 7–10 mm, and in general the imagines (adults) resemble the close relative '' B. lambdella'', but are only two-thirds the size of that species. Their forewings are dark ochre, slightly darker at the tips and the hairy fringe surrounding them. At the border between the light and dark parts there is a dark blotch at the dorsal margin, which forms a continuous pointed patch if the wings are laid back while the moth rests. ''Batia lambdella'' is a species of gelechioid moth. It belongs to the subfamily Oecophorinae of the concealer moth family (Oecophoridae). The genus '' Batia'' is sometimes treated as monotypic, but this seems spurious considering how similar ''B. lambdella'' is to the type species '' B. lunaris'' (Lesser Tawny Crescent). Its wingspan is 11–17 mm, and in general the imagines (adults) resemble ''B. lunaris'', but are about half as large again. The forewings are dark ochre, slightly darker at the tips and the hairy fringe surrounding them. James Francis Stephens
James Francis Stephens (16 September 1792 – 22 December 1852) was an English entomologist and naturalist. He is known for his 12 volume ''Illustrations of British Entomology'' (1846) and the ''Manual of British Beetles'' (1839). Early life Stephens was born in Shoreham-by-Sea and studied at Christ's Hospital. His father was a navy captain William James Stephens (d. 1799) and his mother was Mary Peck (later Mrs Dallinger).
