Henry Jefferson Percival "Jeff" Bate (5 March 190615 April 1984) was an Australian politician, representing the United Australia Party and the Liberal Party of Australia for most of his career, but ended as an independent. Early life Jeff Bate was born in Tilba, New South Wales on 5 March 1906, a son of Henry Bate (politician), Henry John Bate, a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, and his wife Lily Percival, a leading contralto. He was educated at Newington College (1918–21), The King's School, Parramatta (1922–23) and the University of Sydney. He became a farmer at Bodalla, New South Wales, Bodalla, Wallaga Lake and Tilba Tilba. He won prizes for dairy fodder conservation at the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales, Royal Agricultural Society show. Henry Bate (Australian Politician)
Henry John Bate (19 April 1881 – 4 January 1967) was an Australian politician. Born at Tilba Tilba to farmer Richard Mossop Bate and Henrietta Higman, he was educated at Newington College (1897–1899),Newington College Register of Past Students 1863–1998 (Syd, 1999) p. 11 Sydney Technical and Hawkesbury Agricultural Colleges before becoming a farmer. On 2 May 1905 he married Lily Percival, with whom he had two sons; he would later remarry Elise May Mead on 23 May 1918. In 1910 he was elected to Eurobodalla Shire Council, serving until 1913 and again from 1917 to 1928. In 1926 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Nationalist member for Goulburn, transferring to South Coast in 1927. In 1931 he joined the United Australia Party. Bate served until 1941, and died in Bega in 1967. The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. Thelma Florence Bate CBE (; 3 August 1904 – 26 July 1984) was an Australian community leader and women's activist. Early life and education Born Thelma Florence Olsen in Sydney on 3 August 1904, she was the daughter of Norwegian seaman Olaf Olsen and his wife Florence Beatrice Olsen (''née'' St Clair), who was born in Melbourne. Her mother married Carl Gustav Sundstrom in 1912. Thelma attended Fort Street Girls' High School before graduating from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in 1928. She subsequently taught at Meriden School and travelled abroad. Career In 1969, she stood as the Country Party candidate for the seat of Dubbo in the state election. She was best known as the wife of Harold Holt, who was prime minister of Australia from 1966 until his disappearance in 1967.
