Batak Hydropower Cascade
The Batak Hydroelectric Cascade ( bg, Баташки водносилов път, translit. ''Batashki Vodnosilov Pat'') is situated in the Pazardzhik Province, southern Bulgaria and is among the first hydroelectric cascades in the country. Inaugurated on 6 September 1959, it includes seven reservoirs and three underground hydro power plants — Batak Hydro Power Plant, Batak, Peshtera Hydroelectric Power Station, Peshtera and Aleko Hydro Power Plant, Aleko with a combined installed capacity of 254.2 MW, producing an average of 796 GWh annually. A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled release of water downstream from a dam or levee, typically into the riverbed of the dammed river itself. In the United Kingdom, they may be known as overflow channels. Spillways ensure that water does not damage parts of the structure not designed to convey water. Bratsigovo
Bratsigovo ( bg, Брацигово ) is a town in Southern Bulgaria. It is located in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, on the banks of the Umishka River in Pazardzhik oblast, and is close to the towns of Peshtera and Krichim. Bratsigovo Hills on Trinity Peninsula in Antarctica are named after the town. Some Aromanians live in Bratsigovo. Velingrad
Velingrad ( bg, Велинград ) is a town in Pazardzhik Province, Southern Bulgaria, located at the western end of Chepino Valley, part of the Rhodope Mountains. It is the administrative center of the homonymous Velingrad Municipality and one of the most popular Bulgarian balneological resorts. The town has a population of 22,602 inhabitants according to the 2011 census of Velingrad. Pelton Wheel
The Pelton wheel or Pelton Turbine is an impulse-type water turbine invented by American inventor Lester Allan Pelton in the 1870s. The Pelton wheel extracts energy from the impulse of moving water, as opposed to water's dead weight like the traditional overshot water wheel. Many earlier variations of impulse turbines existed, but they were less efficient than Pelton's design. Water leaving those wheels typically still had high speed, carrying away much of the dynamic energy brought to the wheels. Pelton's paddle geometry was designed so that when the rim ran at half the speed of the water jet, the water left the wheel with very little speed; thus his design extracted almost all of the water's impulse energywhich made for a very efficient turbine. Toshkov Chark
Toshkov Chark ( bg, Тошков чарк) is a small reservoir situated in the Western Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, east of the Golyam Beglik and Beglika reservoirs. Its lies in Batak Municipality in the southern part of Pazardzhik Province and forms part of the Batak Hydropower Cascade (254 MW). The reservoir is situated on the river Devinska reka in the Vacha drainage, at the confluence of its tributaries the Beglishka reka and Selkyupria. It serves as a seasonal equalizer of waters from the catchment of the river under the Gashnya gathering derivation. In addition, a 3.5 m tunnel gathering water from the right tributaries of the Devinska reka flow into Toshkov Chark. Devinska Reka
The Devinska reka ( bg, Девинска река) is a river in the Rhodope Mountains, southern Bulgaria, a left tributary of the Vacha, itself a right tributary of the river Maritsa. This 57 km long river is the longest tributary of the Vacha and drains the highest parts of the ridges Batak Mountain and Veliyshko–Videnishki of the western Rhodopes. Geography The river springs under the name Semiza at an altitude of 2,000 m, 2 km south of the summit of Golyama Syutkya (2,186 m) in the Batak Mountain of the western Rhodope Mountains.
