Bassoon
The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the double reed family, which plays in the tenor and bass ranges. It is composed of six pieces, and is usually made of wood. It is known for its distinctive tone color, wide range, versatility, and virtuosity. It is a non-transposing instrument and typically its music is written in the bass and tenor clefs, and sometimes in the treble. There are two forms of modern bassoon: the Buffet (or French) and Heckel (or German) systems. It is typically played while sitting using a seat strap, but can be played while standing if the player has a harness to hold the instrument. Sound is produced by rolling both lips over the reed and blowing direct air pressure to cause the reed to vibrate. Its fingering system can be quite complex when compared to those of other instruments. Rottenburgh Family
The Rottenburgh family was a Belgian family of instrument makers and musicians who created a highly regarded collection of instruments in Brussels in the 18th century. The Rottenburgh family was the leading provider of wind instruments to the Belgian market in the 1700s, supplying the Royal Palace of Brussels and all of the city's cathedrals. They also made string instruments for these institutions. The patriarch of the family, Herman-Arnold Rottenburgh (d. 1711), was a violinist in the royal chapel at the Palace of Coudenberg. His son, Jean-Hyacinth Rottenburgh (1672–1756), was the most important member of the Rottenburgh family. Jean-Hyacinth made woodwind and string instruments which are still valued today for use in early music ensembles; particularly recorders, flutes, oboes, bassoons, violins and cellos. Wilhelm Heckel GmbH is a manufacturer of woodwind instruments based in Wiesbaden, Germany. It is best known for its bassoons, which are considered some of the finest available.The company was established in 1831 by the instrument maker Johann Adam Heckel. Hugo Fox
Hugo Fox (February 2, 1897 in South Whitley, Indiana – December 29, 1969 in South Whitley, Indiana) was an American classical bassoonist. He also designed and manufactured bassoons and oboes. Fox studied the bassoon with Adolph Weiss, a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 1921, he studied with Walter Guetter, the principal bassoonist of the CSO. The following year, he took over Guetter's post, at his recommendation, and remained in that capacity from 1922 to 1949. He also taught at Northwestern University from 1936 to 1950. In 1949, Fox founded the Fox Products Corporation, which made bassoons and oboes. The company is a supplier of double reed instruments. Guntram Wolf (25 March 1935, Kronach – 4 February 2013, Kronach) was a maker of modern and historical woodwind instruments in Kronach, Germany. His productions He specialized in the modern Heckel (German) system bassoon and was one of the better known makers of Wiener (Viennese) oboes. He also made a considerable number of historical instrument replicas of bassoons, oboes and clarinets, as well as child-sized models of the same instruments. Innovations Guntram Wolf also developed a redesign of the contrabassoon after an acoustical concept by Benedikt Eppelsheim, called the "Contraforte".
