Bassendean, Western Australia
__NOTOC__ Bassendean (once referred to as West Guildford) is a north-eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the Town of Bassendean. It is also the name of the sand dune system on the Swan Coastal Plain known as the ''Bassendean Dune System''. History In 1829, the land along the Swan River was allotted to British settlers as they arrived in the newly created Swan River Colony. James Henty and his brothers were granted 2,000 acres upon which they grazed their livestock and built a mud-brick homestead. They called their property ''Stoke Farm''. In 1832, the Henty brothers sold the farm to the Colonial Secretary, Peter Broun who re-named the homestead ''Bassendean''. Over the years the Bassendean property became incorporated into the suburb of West Guildford and in 1922, West Guildford was renamed Bassendean. The Town of Bassendean is a local government area in the northeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, west of the industrial centre of Midland and about northeast of Perth's central business district. The Town covers an area of , maintains 97 km of roads and had a population of approximately 15,000 as at the 2016 Census. The Town of Bassendean is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. History The West Guildford Road District was created on 10 May 1901. It was renamed the Bassendean Road District on 7 July 1922, and on 1 July 1961, became the Shire of Bassendean following the enactment of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Bassendean is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based in the eastern suburbs of Perth. It is a safe Labor seat. Geography Bassendean is a compact electorate situated east of the Perth CBD. The district is bordered to the south by Swan River, to the east by the Tonkin Highway and Beechboro Road North, to the north by the Reid Highway and to the west by Lord Street. It includes the suburbs of Bassendean, Ashfield, Eden Hill, Kiara, Lockridge, as well as parts of Beechboro, Bayswater, Bennett Springs, Caversham, Embleton and Morley.
