Bassel Al-Assad Stadium (Homs)
Bassel al-Assad Stadium () is a multi-use stadium located in the Baba Amr district in the city of Homs, Syria. It was opened in 2000, and is mostly used for football matches and serves as a second venue for the football clubs of Al-Karamah SC and Al-Wathba SC. Located in the Baba Amr district of the city, the stadium is able to hold up to 25,000 spectators. It was renovated in 2010. During the Syrian Civil War, Baba Amr was the epicentre of fighting in the 2012 Homs offensive. As a result, the stadium was heavily damaged and the playing surface was entirely deteriorated. However, the stadium was renovated during 2016 and a new turf was installed. Al-Karamah SC ( ar, نادي الكرامة الرياضي) is a Syrian professional football club based in the city of Homs. Founded in 1928, it is considered to be one of Asia's oldest sporting clubs. The club has won eight Syrian League titles and eight Syrian Cup titles. It also was the first Syrian club to win both the league and cup titles in the same year. Al-Wathba Sport Club ( ar, نادي الوثبة الرياضي) is a Syrian professional football club based in Homs, that competes in the Syrian Premier League. History Al-Wathba is a professional football club based in Homs, Syria, and they are one of the oldest Syrian clubs. Al-Wathba were founded in 1937 under the name of "Al-Fedaa Club" by a number of young amateur athletes who took "Dar Al-Jodi" (located in al-Hamidiyah neighborhood in Homs), as a place to practice their sport activities. In 1953, the club obtained the license, adding football, basketball games, athletics, swimming, and cycling, and they won the Homs championship from 1963 to 1968. 2012 Homs Offensive
The 2012 Homs offensive was a Syrian Army offensive on the armed rebellion stronghold of Homs, within the scope of the Siege of Homs, beginning in early February 2012 and ending with the U.N. brokered cease fire on 14 April 2012. The offensive began by artillery bombardment by the Syrian armed forces in response to an attack by the Free Syrian Army on Syrian Army checkpoints on 3 February 2012, killing 10 soldiers. Government forces then began to bombard the city using tanks, helicopters, and artillery, rockets and mortars. The Syrian government has denied that the bombardment is indiscriminate and blamed "armed groups" for the civilian deaths, including the deaths of foreign journalists.
