Bassam is an Arabic name and a given name roughly meaning "one who smiles". John Steven Bassam, Baron Bassam of Brighton, (born 11 June 1953) is a British Labour and Co-operative politician and a member of the House of Lords. Background Bassam grew up on a council estate in Great Bentley, Essex and went to the local boys secondary modern school in Pathfield Road, now Clacton Coastal Academy in Clacton-on-Sea. Bassam Tibi ( ar, بسام طيبي), is a Syrian-born German political scientist and professor of international relations specializing in Islamic studies and Middle Eastern studies. He was born in 1944 in Damascus, Syria to an aristocratic family, and moved to West Germany in 1962, where he later became a naturalized citizen in 1976. He is known for his analysis of international relations and the introduction of Islam to the study of international conflict and of civilization. Bassam Abu Sharif ( ar, بسام أبو شريف; born 1946 in Jerusalem) is a former senior adviser to Yasser Arafat and leading cadre of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). He was previously a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). A Marxist and an admirer of Mao Zedong and Che Guevara, Abu Sharif, then a member of the PFLP, was dubbed the "face of terror" by ''Time'' magazine for his role in the Dawson's Field hijackings in 1970, when the PFLP hijacked Pan Am, Swissair, and TWA flights and blew them up in the Jordanian desert, triggering King Hussein's expulsion of the PLO from Jordan, which became known as Black September. Bassam Saba (26 October 19584 December 2020) was a Lebanese musician and a promoter of Arabic music in the west. He was a co-founder of the New York Arabic Orchestra and the director of Lebanon's national conservatory of music. He died of complications from COVID-19 in Beirut, Lebanon on December 4, 2020. Bassam Shakaa ( ar, بسّام الشكعة, Bassām Shak’ā) (1930 – 22 July 2019) was mayor of Nablus from 1976 to 1982. Biography Bassam Shakaa was a member of one of the most distinguished families in Nablus. He became a member of the Jordanian regional branch of the Ba'ath Party in the early 1950s and as a consequence was wanted by Jordanian authorities, forcing him to flee to Syria. He was one of the fierce critics of Syria's independence from the United Arab Republic and after being jailed by the Syrian authorities following his resignation from the Ba'ath Party because of the 1966 Syrian coup d'état, 1966 split within the Ba'ath movement. Ibn Bassam
Ibn Bassām or Ibn Bassām al-Shantarinī (; 1058-1147) was an Arab poet and historian from al-Andalus. He was born in Santarém (sometimes spelled Shantarin or Xantarin) and hailed from the Banu Taghlib tribe. He died in 1147. Ibn Bassam describes how the incessant invasions of the Castillans forced him to run away from Santarém in Portugal, "the last of the cities of the west," after seeing his lands ravaged and his wealth destroyed, a ruined man with no possessions save his battered sword. Especially well known is his anthology (The Treasury concerning the Merits of the People of Iberia) one of the most important sources of information in the field of history, literature and culture of the Almoravid dynasty. Bassam Yammine (Arabic: بسام يمين; born 1968) is a Lebanese economist and former CEO of Credit Suisse Saudi Arabia. Early life and education Yammine was born into a Maronites, Maronite family. Bassam Talhouni ( ar, بسام التلهوني; born 1964) is a Jordanian lawyer, academic and politician. He served as industry minister. Between August 2013 and September 2016 he was minister of justice. Talhouni served as minister of justice in Bisher Al-Khasawneh's cabinet. He resigned with Samir Mobeideen on 28 February 2021 due to breaking lockdown in the COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan.
