Basque Parliamentary Election, 1994
The 1994 Basque regional election was held on Sunday, 23 October 1994, to elect the 5th Parliament of the Basque Autonomous Community. All 75 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ/PNV) won 22 seats, the Socialist Party of the Basque Country (PSE–PSOE) came second with 12 seats, People's Unity (HB) and the People's Party (PP) both won 11 seats each. Basque Solidarity (EA) won 8 seats. This was also the first election to the Basque parliament that the Socialist Party and the Basque Country Left (EE) party contested together as a unified party. Basque Parliament
The Basque Parliament (Basque: ''Eusko Legebiltzarra'', Spanish: ''Parlamento Vasco'') is the legislative body of the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain and the elected assembly to which the Basque Government is responsible. The Parliament meets in the Basque capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, although the first session of the modern assembly, as constituted by the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country, was held in Guernica – the symbolic centre of Basque freedoms – on 31 March 1980. Later in 1980 it started meeting at the premises of the Council of Álava. In 1982, it got its own site in a former high school. The symbol of the Parliament is an oaken sculpture by Nestor Basterretxea representing a stylized tree, an allusion to the tradition of Basque political assemblies meeting under a tree, as in Guernica. Álava (Basque Parliament Constituency)
Álava ( eu, Araba) is one of the three constituencies ( es, link=no, circunscripciones) represented in the Basque Parliament, the regional legislature of the Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Autonomous Community. The constituency currently elects 25 Deputy (legislator), deputies. Its boundaries correspond to those of the Spanish province of Álava. The electoral system uses the D'Hondt method and a Closed list, closed-list proportional representation, with a minimum threshold of three percent.
