Basketball Australia is the governing and controlling body of basketball in Australia, responsible for the development and promotion of the sport at all levels. Basketball Australia sanctions Australia's two professional leagues, the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) as well as the semi-professional leagues that were once part of the Australian Basketball Association (ABA). The Australian Basketball Association (ABA) was a semi-professional basketball entity based in Australia. The ABA was Australia's biggest basketball competition for many years. With over 120 teams participating across five leagues and six states, the ABA competition was the vital link between grass roots basketball in Australia and the elite NBL and WNBL leagues. The association provided a high standard of competition for local basketballers from across the country as well as an intense environment for professionals to use in their off seasons. Between 1965 and 2008, the ABA played an integral part in the development of Australian basketball with hundreds of former and active NBL and WNBL players honing their skills against world-class opposition. The Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team is the men's wheelchair basketball side that represents Australia in international competitions. The team is known as the Rollers. Australia took the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Australia has competed at every men's wheelchair basketball tournament at the Paralympic Games except 1964. Kevin Coombs was Australia's first captain of the men's wheelchair basketball team. The Rollers qualified for the 2016 Summer Paralympics by winning the 2015 Asia Oceania Qualifying Tournament and finished sixth. Australia Men's National Basketball Team
The Australian men's national basketball team, known as the Boomers after the slang term for a male kangaroo, represents Australia in international basketball competition. Since the late 1980s, Australia has been placed among the world elite teams as the Boomers have reached the semi-finals at both Summer Olympic Games and FIBA World Cup on many occasions. Originally a member of the FIBA Oceania region, Australia nowadays competes at the FIBA Asia Cup where the Boomers were the dominant team at their first appearance. Basketball at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 18 to 26 August at the Wutaishan Sports Center in Nanjing, China. As in Basketball at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, 2010 the 3x3 (basketball), 3x3 format returned, along with a new event, the skill challenge. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) could enter a maximum of 2 teams, 1 team of 4 athletes per each gender. As hosts, China was given 2 teams, 1 per each gender. 6 teams, 3 per each gender qualified at the 2013 U18 3x3 World Championships and another 6 teams, 3 per each gender qualified from the 2013 3x3 World Tour Final. 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship
The 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship was held at the Edel-optics.de Arena in Hamburg, Germany, from 16 to 26 August 2018. Both men's and women's tournaments were held, with 12 women's and 16 men's teams competing, representing 19 different nations. Each team selected 12 players for the tournament. The men's competition was won by Great Britain, with the United States winning silver and Australia winning bronze.
