Basing Park
Basing Park was a country house in Privett, Hampshire, notable for being the family home of the Nicholson family. The 1878 'White's Directory of Hampshire' described it as a "large and commodious structure, in the Grecian style, commanding extensive views". The first building on the site was recorded in 1567, whilst being under the ownership of John Love. It was later extended by subsequent owners, one of whom, employed the architect Sydney Smirke for alterations and extensions. It is believed that three of the original four lodge houses had been built to the designs of Smirke. In the early 1835 the house and estate were acquired by Joseph Martineau, who, by the mid 19th century, along with his gardeners, had designed a well known garden encompassing the mansion, these were as follows; pinetum containing many different species of evergreen trees and shrubs, rose and rock garden, walled kitchen garden, and an arboretum. Privett
Privett is a small village, conservation area and former civil parish, now in the parish of Froxfield and Privett, in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is northwest of Petersfield, just off the A272 road. Its principal feature is Holy Trinity Church, designed by Arthur Blomfield and built at the expense of local landowner, businessman and M.P. William Nicholson. Nicholson was also responsible for building in the village a number of residences for workers on his Basing Park estate. In 1931 the parish had a population of 172. History A place called ''Pryfetesflōd'' (Privett's River), located in the Weald, is mentioned in the 755 AD entry of the '' Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'' (the story of Cynewulf and Cyneheard), as the place where Sigeberht of Wessex, previously a ruler of Hampshire, was driven off to. William Nicholson (distiller)
William Nicholson JP (2 September 1824 – 25 July 1909) was an English distiller and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1866 and 1885, and later joined the Conservative Party. He was also an English amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1845 to 1869. Early life and education Nicholson was born at Upper Holloway, London, the son of John Nicholson of Upper Clapton, Middlesex and his wife Ellen Payne daughter of Richard Payne. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a member of the family which owned the J&W Nicholson & Co gin distillery based in Clerkenwell and Three Mills.
