Basin Street East
Basin Street East was a notable nightclub of the 1960s in New York City. Several live albums were recorded there, including Peggy Lee's ''Basin Street East Proudly Presents Miss Peggy Lee'' (1961), and Billy Eckstine's '' At Basin St. East'' (1961). The club was located in the then-Shelton Towers Hotel (more recently known as the New York Marriott East Side), and replaced a previous club in the hotel called Casa Cugat. ''Recorded "Live" at Basin Street East'' is an album by the jazz vocalese group Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan recorded at the New York City nightclub Basin Street East. The album features the group who had re-formed in 1963 featuring Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks, with Yolande Bavan replacing Annie Ross who had left the group in 1962. Reception Scott Yanow, writing on AllMusic said of the album that "This recording finds Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert in prime form, with Bavan doing her best to fit in (her accent does stand out, although her singing skills are impressive) ...The highlights include a classic rendition of " Doodlin'," John Coltrane's "Cousin Mary," Hendricks' humorous "Feed Me" and "Dis Hyunh" (really "This Here"). Basin Street West
Basin Street West was a nightclub owned by Jack Yanoff in San Francisco located in the North Beach neighborhood at on 401 Broadway. It opened as a Jazz club in 1964, then integrated soul and rock acts before its closure in 1973. History Jack Yanoof opened the Basin Street West as a jazz club in 1964. The first performers were Latin jazz pianist Eddie Cano and pianist Hampton Hawes. Comedians also performed at the club. The only surviving video footage of Lenny Bruce performing in a nightclub was recorded at Basin Street West in August 1965. By 1967, Yanoof was booking rock acts like Jefferson Airplane. Soul acts such as Otis Redding and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles also performed at the club. R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner recorded a live album there in 1969. Trinidad López III (May 15, 1937 – August 11, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and actor. His first album included a cover version of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer", which earned a Golden Disc for him. His other hits included "Lemon Tree (Will Holt song), Lemon Tree", "I'm Comin' Home, Cindy" and "Sally Was a Good Old Girl". Delloreese Patricia Early (July 6, 1931 – November 19, 2017), known professionally as Della Reese, was an American jazz and gospel singer, actress, and ordained minister whose career spanned seven decades. She began her long career as a singer, scoring a hit with her 1959 single "Don't You Know?". In the late 1960s she hosted her own talk show, ''Della'', which ran for 197 episodes. Raphael Homer "Ray" Bryant (December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2011) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Early life Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 24, 1931. His mother was an ordained minister who had taught herself to play the piano; his father also played the piano and sang. His brothers were the bass player Tommy, drummer and singer Len, and Lynwood. Ray began playing the piano around the age of six or seven, following the example of his mother and his sister, Vera. Gospel influences in his playing came from being part of the church at this stage in his early life. He had switched from classical music to jazz by his early teens and played the double bass at junior high school. He was first paid to play when he was 12: "I would play for dances, and they'd sneak me into bars. I'd get four or five bucks a night, which was good money then." Lambert, Hendricks & Ross were an American vocalese trio formed by jazz vocalists Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. From 1962 to 1964, Ross was replaced by vocalist Yolande Bavan. History The group formed in 1957 and recorded their first album ''Sing a Song of Basie'' for ABC-Paramount Records. The album featured versions of Count Basie standards and was successful enough that the Count Basie Orchestra collaborated with them on ''Sing Along With Basie'' (1959). ''Sing a Song of Basie'' was awarded a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998. Beginning in 1959, the trio recorded three LPs with Columbia Records. They recorded a version of Ross's 1952 song " Twisted", featuring her lyrics set to a Wardell Gray melody.
